  • Working in Dakota oil fields

Anyone do that or know anyone that does? A guy in our ward did it found another job and back there again. There 3 weeks home one week. I have a cousin whose husband does same thing. I think when homes are sold in all likelihood people will move there families there.

Really good money. Why I wouldn't do it besides being a certified s to n mechanic. (slim to none) Isolated from civilization I think. And constant 20 below weather doesn't sound appealing to me. I hate cold weather in Idaho. Money good though.

I'm considering this type of career move as well.

My cousin does it. His wife and kids stay home in Idaho.

My dad used to say, 'If you want to be a man, you have to work in the oil fields of the Dakotas.' Actually, he never said that...but if he had said that, I would have probably agreed with him.

If he had said that maybe you wouldn't have turned out so rotten.

At least people are starting to realize there is no reason to separate Dakota into two states. Progress.

I have fond memories of North Dakota. Been to a few military schools up there in Devil's Lake. It sure is cold in the winter!

I wouldn't want to work the oil fields. Tough work from what I hear.

I know about four or five guys from Rexburg working up there. It's good money but if they could find something else they would jump at it.

My cousin is from Rigby. He's a construction worker by trade. It's the most money he's ever made.

We know two couples that are working there. One is ex-military and was making a very good living with a private security firm in Iraq. But since that market has dried up they had to look for something else and he has found a good job driving trucks up there. We also know a couple who moved up there initially to work in the fields but then they opened their own boarding house/hotel and make a good living housing the workers that are streaming in.

Guy in our ward that does that commuted 60 miles at some cheese processing factory for some time. Moved closer to work. Has fast kid. too. Quit cheese place mechanic went over there got tired of it and got job at new cheese plant. Didn't go well back in Dakotas for good wage. Trailer burnt. Good money but too cold for me. Alaska pipeling puts people in business too but too cold as well.

With oil at $60, there are going to be a lot of folks leaving the Dakota oil patch--hopefully jerk free.

Yep, although some drilling will continue since most frackers can still make money above 40-45/barrel. Most will be drilling just to keep leased land.
