      • I like that HFN and Kauai will be in the same state together. I may have to visit.

Each state appears to be named for its most picturesque location. Ah, Gary. Lovely especially this time of year.

Why couldn't they just put monitors on birds and track those?

Agreed very cool. Some birds appear to move all the way from Argentina to Canada and back.

I'm pretty sure many monitors were used. But IIRC, a lot of people helped with the data. I could be wrong though.

                      • Apologies if I am missing something obvious here. Is this all migratory birds? Or limited to one/some species?

Follow up question. Is there one for the Eastern hemisphere? I'm interested in seeing African vs. European Swallows.

Monitors are very expensive to purchase, expensive to place on birds (very labor intensive by highly-skilled people who know how to not injure the birds), and difficult to track over water. In order to have monitors trackable via satellite, you would need something far heavier than most passerine birds could safely carry.
