As much as I hate Paris, I agree. It's worth visiting once. Unless, of course, if you're a mysophobe, as Paris is one of the filthiest cities on the planet.

Not even close. Among European cities, London is a lot dirtier, I think. On the other hand, I was surprised how clean Madrid is.

My wife doesn't really want to go to Paris (she's seen it a few times). She does want me to experience it but I have little desire to do so. But she will not go backpacking for good reason.

It's a negotiation tactic. So when she picks out a crusie or something that she wants to do; she'll be able to say "at least it's not Paris". And I'll be able to do another backpacking trek because "it was the one I wanted to go on with you but now have to go alone or with a son(s)".

My wife is a good negotiator - she doesn't do laundry.

I was framing a camera shot of a long waterfall spilling into one of the lakes when I hear voices... And out of nowhere a fellow backpacker emerges from behind a boulder and introduces himself. He then introduces his new bride. They've set up camp in a secluded boulderfield and are on their honeymoon. Didn't expect to see anyone... and here I am with a camera lumbering around.
That reminds me, once I was on a hike in the Boise foothills with my girls, and we ran into a couple emerging from a rock overhang. The guy had a camp mattress under his arm. It was about 2-3pm. Luckily the girls didn't ask any questions.

Just thought I'd share this message from the Stake President.

On behalf of the Stake Presidency, we wish to thank you all for the great
support you and your ward members were over the past few days. We had
several hundred volunteers show up in Molalla today who put more than 50
four-wheel drive vehicles in the forest and fixed food and coordinated maps and took phone calls and placed phone calls and sent text messages
and made sure that everything was in order. What a great example of the

We found a blog post from my former partner, which he put up about a year ago:

I also backpack alone all the time. While I'm not advocating this for others, I take no precautions -- no itinerary, no SPOT. I often change my mind as to my itinerary while I'm out anyway. I go over crazy off-trail passes all the time, and generally try to find areas with no one in miles. My only concession to age is to see if I can go further on the first day than I've ever gone in the past. I finally made it all the way to Darwin Bench on the first day from North Lake last weekend, and I didn't get started until 11am. (This trick been working for the past 2 years, but I know at some point the jig will be up! )

And still....I'm convinced that by far the most danger I face is driving back home. (The stretch from Palmdale to LA at night is sheer terror.) Solo backpacking is a wonderful lesson in self-sufficiency.
Man. I hope we (his friends) get a chance to lecture him about this.
