Supporting the Clackamas County lead, the local impromptu LDS emergency search and rescue teams are out in full force. Quite impressive the way we can mobilize so quickly.

Yikes, I couldn't imagine being a parent in that situation. Hopefully they are found soon and in good health. It is nice to know they have some survival training through scouts.

They've found the truck the boys were in, and they've now got a dozen 4x4's on the logging roads looking for them. They are supposed to be hearty boys with extensive out doors experience, and it's wet but relatively warm. They were dressed well. But they're out 2 nights now, with little to eat.

For SoCalCoug - Where they are, is the heart of Big Foot country. I bet there's gonna be a good story in there somewhere.

I'm much more worried about One of my former law partners, who is a serious backpacker. For years he has gone on long (2 or 3-week) treks all alone. I used to urge him not to do that. Now he's been missing for a week and everyone is worried sick. He has two young children. Search party has been out looking for him for about 5 days.

In the Central Sierra. There's been snow there already this last week. I'm fearing the worst.

Lawrence Conn, 53, began his hike on Oct. 19 at Taboose Creek Trailhead in the Inyo National Forest and he planned to travel over the Taboose Pass toward the John Muir Trail in Kings Canyon National Park. It is possible his route also included Split Mountain and areas to the south, including Pinchot Pass.

The Air National Guard is assisting staff from the Inyo County Sheriff's Department and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks with three helicopters. More ground and air search teams are expected to arrive through the coming week.

Yikes. I did that a couple of times during college. My parents never seemed to worry. The last time I did it was right after I graduated college since I had a couple of months before my start date. I was recently married but talked my new bride into letting me go alone while she went on a trip to Europe with her mother as a graduation gift for her.

I wasn't in our apartment when she returned since I was "delayed" on the trail. Actually, I had a lot of luck trout fishing so my freeze dried food lasted longer than planned and I decided to hike some additional trails. By the time I was back on the grid and called, she had worked herself into a panic and was convinced I'd been eaten by bears (there are no or few bears in the national forest I was in). I had a great time.

Since then, I've always taken one of my sons (at my wife's insitsence) on my backpacking adventures but they have been too few for my liking. I was planning a great western backpacking tour where I go alone from national park to natural park and spend a few days in a motel with hot water before I spend another 1-2 weeks in a national park. That was until the film 127 hours was released so my wife knows there are other dangers besides [mountain] lions, tigers, and bears.

Keep us posted on your friends search. I know the hazards of hiking alone and going on an extended trek alone is not ideal. I wouldn't let any of my teenage sons do it and would advise my adult sons against it. Still, I love going treking and prefer to do it alone. I'd also go with my wife if that was an option but it isn't.
