    Throwing away Baseball Cards

When my parents moved out of the house I grew up in a few years ago, I got most, if not all of my things that were left in their house. This included three full good-sized bins of baseball, football, and basketball cards. These bins are now just a bunch of clutter in my storage room, and I'm afraid it might be time to throw them away.

Have any of you faced a similar decision with a childhood collection?

I used to famously write letters to athletes as a kid and get autographs. So those would not be thrown away, but the others are just boxes upon boxes upon boxes of cards that I just really don't have the space for/don't know what to do.

To throw away or not to throw away, that IS the question!

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Put them on ebay or craigslist. Someone will buy them hoping there's a hidden valuable card in the collection.

give them to the young men in your ward. They can sell them for scout camp.

Don't you have a boy? Keep them for him.

I was never a huge collector, but I have about 3 binders of various cards that I kept. I also kept a 1989 Topps complete set, something that I had never cracked open as a kid b/c I wanted to keep it pristine. I recently gave that to my son as well. He was very excited and it has been fun to look at the cards and talk to him about some of the players I liked growing up.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I was a baseball card dealer from 1989-1993. About a year ago, I took around 20 monster boxes (5,000 each) of commons to the Habitat for Humanity store. I've recently decided that most of that stuff was so over-produced that I only keep stuff that actually means something to me.

You can buy unopened 87 Topps wax for about $15 on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1987-87-TOPP...#ht_500wt_1180

You'll notice that that price is cheaper than the case cost in 1987 @ 50¢ a pack back then.

I started using them for clickers on the spokes of my bicycles. Sadly I didn't care who I was using or who I wasn't. Also the ones that didn't get used got chucked.

I would love to have my Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Joe Torre, Brooks Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, etc. rookie cards now.

You are old. Also, Jackie Robinson rookie card? Which set?

This is one thing I love about my attic. I have my 5-6 huge boxes of cards shoved up there. They should probably be tossed, but for now they are out of the way and building equity!

I don't know. I didn't pay attention to that obviously. As far as I can remember, I only bought Topps.

My favorite baseball cards of all time:

                    53 Bowman Pee Wee Reese

61 Topps Ernie Banks back-to-back MVP card

58 Topps Mantle/Aaron, they look like kids

84 Fleer Glenn Hubbard THAT BEARD! And the snake. But, check out that beard!

87 Fleer Cory Snyder, they inserted an odd-looking baseball into the border of the card to make it look like he was going to catch it.

I probably had all of those that were pre-1960. That is when I outgrew buying them and started putting them on the spokes.

I have too many baseball cards and comic books from when I was kid. And yes, the 80s were the times when all of that was way over produced which means that my 10s of thousands of things is basically worthless right now. My plan is to keep it all stored and when the apocalypse happens and electricity is gone, I can use it for either bartering/trades (you give me pepperoni, I give you an old Wade Boggs baseball card) or use it to help start fires. I take the brethren's advice in having a survival and food storage at the hand.
