  • Name My Baby Boy

After having two girls, my wife and I are now having.a boy. I'm drawing blanks on what to name this kid. I hate about half of the top 100 names on the Social Security Agency's list of top 100 boys names for 2010, and some of and a couple of the names I like are literally in the top 5 in Utah when you include all versions of the name (e.g. Alex and Alexander).

I've decided on two principles -- I don't want to give the kid a name this kid might hate (this dawned on me when I was thinking about names like Henry and Peter), I don't don't want to be creative with the name because creative names don't always impress third parties and don't always look good on resumes, and I don't want to do what Wuap calls the "WASPY" naming practice because I think in reality this practice has trickled its way down the socioeconomic ladder just like its discussed in Freakonomics.

I found a name for my second daughter that I love. It's a recognizable name but it's not in the top 100 and I think it's cute. I'd like to find something similar for my boy, only without the cute part. I've been drawing blanks, I've thought about Paul because it's my brother's name and I've always liked him a lot (plus Paul Newman is my favorite actor of all time!). But I can't sell myself on it.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

There is nothing wrong with Henry.

    Name him Carlton.

Nothing trendy that he will pay for on the playground one day. Masculine, basic. William, John, Michael, Matthew, Christopher, James. That is my take.

No on Carlton. Henry has been trending up in Utah. But I can't shrug off the fact that I would have hated the name during the era when I grew up.

I suggested Adam, but my wife is dead set against it because a former boyfriend she wrote to on his mission was named that. I told her I wasn't intimidated by him and I couldn't care less about it if she didn't care less, but that's not the case. Michael

I do agree with you however and I think the first rule of naming a child is to do no harm with the name. I side of me wants to be out of the ordinary with the name but not to the extent that the kid will hate his name or he'll have some off the wall name that would raise eyebrows on a resume.

I've thought about Michael, it's the 49th most popular name in Utah but #3 nationwide (supposedly Michael is a very popular name in the black community). I like Luke but when you combine Lucas and Luke it's the most common name in Utah with the possible exception of Alex/Alexander. Robert could work (#66 in Utah) but my last name begins with an R, it worked for Ronald Reagan I guess.

Ty. It fits all your criteria. Probably the best all-around boy name out there. I love it because it's a very cool, simple, name but it isn't very popular. It's just a plus that you also happen to be a BYU fan.
                    I'm like LeBron James.

Anybody else watch the Ty Detmer interview on BYUTV recently? That was awesome. Great story about how his Dad joked with him when he dropped him off about how all he had to do was get them to paint a "T" on the mountain next to the Y. And by his senior year that's exactly what happened. How's that for a miracle?

As far as a name CMBF, I usually go with names of athletes I like. How about Miles (Austin) or Cliff (Lee)?

Not sure if you're joking or not, but if we have another child, and that child is a boy, this will be his name. Of course, I have extremely different taste in names from CMBF, probably stemming from the fact that I have a very common first name and a very common last name. I grew up in a fairly small town, and there were 6 people with my exact same name at my eye doctor (I got contacts which were the wrong prescription once, because of it). My children will have a very common last name, but none of them will have common first names.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

My son has his great-grandmother's maiden name as his first name. It is unique without being weird, easy to spell & easy to pronounce. A lot of surnames make great first names and it's a fun way to teach them a little of their family history.
(My son also has two middle names which is from his paternal grandfather...in hindsight, it wasn't the best idea for HIM & I'm glad any other children I have will not have two middle names)

We've got an Asher in our ward as well. Cut little guy.

I've always liked the name Christian, except for the fact that it's the word Christian.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
