I am involved in a very sad case where a hispanic man stabbed and killed his wife during a drunken fight in the home, leaving 3 kids without a mother or father (as he's in jail). The father's last name is "Matadamas".

We started a Spanish branch in our stake last month. By California standards, we don't have a ton of Hispanics in our area. But on our first Sunday, we had close to 20 native Spanish speakers show up, most of whom are bilingual. There were also about 20 Spanish speaking returned missionaries who showed up to show support, and about 20 non-Spanish speakers or Cancun Spanish speakers.

Yo no hablo espanol, but I actually gave a 7 minute talk in Spanish that first Sunday. I wrote the talk, ran it through google translate, and then had a buddy clean it up for me. Ran it back through google a number of times to be able to listen to the pronunciation, and then practiced it for a week to get it all down. I was more nervous speaking in front of those 60 people in a foreign language than in front of 750 people in stake conference.

I've been practicing for 20-30 minutes daily on the duolingo app for the past 82 straight days. It's helpful, but my progress is so frustratingly slow. The other frustration with the app is that you have to learn the topics in the order that they select. So while I can order a red dress from the store or a beer from the cantina, but it will likely be months before I get to learn some of the vocabulary from a religion or philosophy module.

Is there a better app that you would recommend that I try instead of or in addition to duolingo?

I would recommend just an old fashioned Spanish-English dictionary and just learn words you need as you go.

I have been doing Duolingo for a year now. Surprised how much I have learned in a year.

When I worked for the state, because I had served a mission and spoke Spanish, they wanted to have me take on the abuse investigations for Spanish families. I told them I was willing, but was concerned about the vocabulary. When I my supervisor gave me a funny look, I explained that I can tell them Jesus loves them and that they shouldn't commit adultery, and I even know what a pene and huevos are. But there just wasn't much call for us to talk about sex as missionaries. I mean, I could probably talk my way around all of the body parts and ultimately get to the bottom of things - but it wasn't as simple as they thought it would be. That just wasn't in my vocabulary as a missionary.
