Not if that's the culture the company decided on.

EDIT: The whole move to casual dress standards was prompted by the "dot-coms" in the late 90s. Law and accounting firms were so eager to please the twenty-something multi-millionaires who ran those companies that they started showing up to meetings with them trying to dress the way they did - black t-shirts and jeans, etc. It was kind of funny to watch. Anyway, the pendulum has already swung a bit back towards a bit more dressy standards. It will probably swing a little farther that way.

    Meanwhile, get off my lawn!

Why don't you try learning the names of your young associates and mail room clerks?

I like business casual dress and usually the dressiest I am is slacks, an open collar shirt, and a blazer.

To me the key is to give the impression that you care about your appearance in the workplace. It's a measure of your respect for the people you are with. The move to a more casual standard has resulted in a lot of goofiness, and every company that has adopted a casual dress policy will tell you they've had a problem with some people going too far with it. (Ill-advised Spandex, for example.) There still have to be some standards, and employers have had to figure that out.

In other words, look like you take your work seriously and respect the people you will spend the day with.

Now, that's not asking too much, is it?
This basically confirms that you are old. If the associates at your firm don't tuck their shirt in they don't take their work seriously.

You have made no mention of the actual work product of these associates. Perhaps the work product stinks because the mentoring and training is lacking.

Interesting thread. This is a point of controversy at my job as well.

When seeing patients in clinic, the older docs at least wear a jacket and tie if not a suit and tie. Some of the younger docs just wear scrubs or just a shirt and slacks with no tie.

There have been some comments in meetings from the older docs that they don't appreciate the way some of the partners "dress like slobs" when they do clinic and that it doesn't reflect well on the practice.

Our patients are mostly older, average age at least 65, and that's part of the reason I always at least wear a tie when I'm in clinic. I think that's what patients are expecting and I need all the help I can get in making a good impression.

                      Exactly. The older doctors.

If someone is sick or dying or whatever, who gives a crap if the doctor has a tie? The first thing I do if I'm in a doctors office is look to see where they went to school.

I look to see where they went to residency. School is basically the same everywhere. I think residency varies more.

Either way the point seems to be that our generation seems to understand better not judging a book by its cover. While the old folks like LAU are superficial.

Says the guy who likes to wear a tie. Presumably you agree with everything else I said. Or do you also approve of unpressed clothing and ill-advised Spandex? BTW, if you keep it up with the straw men I may have to go all Jacob on you and start demanding that you show me where I said such-and-such a thing.

Indeed, shirttails that blow in the breeze betray one of two mind-sets—both of which reflect poorly on the wearer. One is that you think flouting traditional fashion mores makes you appear coolly rebellious. I may be wearing this bespoke shirt, but no one can make me stuff it in my pants. On the contrary, liberated shirttails paired with a tailored suit look hopelessly jejune. On a 12-year-old Catholic-school kid, such a blatant sartorial middle finger might be endearing. On a 30-year-old it’s pathetic. If that’s the best way for you to demonstrate that no one can tell you what to do, perhaps you should shift your attention from your wardrobe to your career.
