I also dig Adam Derrick. His "To Boot New York" line is very cool and works for both work and casual.

+1 on the Adam Derrick. I have a pair of the To Boot New York's and they are very good shoes. I've had them for five years and they still look close to brand new. I think they were going for around $250 but I bought them for less somewhere in PHX.

It's okay. Gidget dresses me too. Half the time I come out of the bedroom only to hear her say, "You're going to wear that?"

The other half I come out of the shower to see a shirt laid out on the bed for me.

When it comes to dress shoes, I prefer slip-ons. But no loafers or tassels.

Sounds like our house.

Aristides prefers slip-ons too. He had some tassels once. Our two year old (at that time) pulled one of the tassels off. It looked weird wearing one shoe with a tassel and one without. Ever since that moment, we have boycotted shoes with tassels.

Most likely at Last Chance? I think there is a huge one on Camelback. It is another one of those Nordstrom close-out places.

I love To Boot. I have a couple pairs of those shoes that I wear every now and then. great quality.

It's scary how much you guys know about shoes. I go cheap. If I can't find it at Famous Footwear, I don't buy it. I allot about 15 minutes per year to buy shoes.

That was it! I can't remember what I paid but I think it was thirty or forty bucks. The shoes were perfect.

The three kinds of shoes that I wear to work:

Motorcycle riding boots: Very comfortable, black leather, covered with little plastic skid plates, breath nicely.

Flip Flops: For when I work at home, and for hot weather when I remember to cut my toe nails.

Hiking boots: Also very comfortable, brown leather, breath well, best for when I need to work in the shop, since they protect my feet from things dropping on them (tools, wood, etc.).

What's your business dress shoe of choice? I'm wondering if some of you have a brand and style that you live and die by.

I'm not a brand whore. What I usually do is go to Burlington Coat Factory or Nordstrom Rack and find a pair. Rack always has plenty of name brands for a good deal, but lately I prefer the really random, unknown brands that the local Burlington carries. My last two pairs have both been some imitation Italian brand called "Giraldi." The black pair is a split toe, and the brown pair is a plain-front loafer with a stylishly perforated upper. Both are leather soled, and both were $35.99. I've had them for over a year, and they have shown no signs of wearing down anytime soon. But even if they only last 2 years, at $35.99, I'll have received my money's worth.

Last Chance is great. If I am in Phoenix, I try to make a stop there. They usually have something good.

In undergrad, we made a pilgrimage there because the rumor was that they had discount Doc Martens (this was back in the early 90s). So we make a roadie to Mesa and we go to Last Chance. We all found a pair of Docs for about $30 each (which was a major steal at the time, as those shoes retailed for $90 or so).

I guess the main point of this story is for me to admit to myself that at one time in my life, I made a great effort to wear Doc Martens.

I think I did have a couple of pairs of silvertabs. Never owned a levi's jacket.....that one piece of clothing carries too much high school heavy metal baggage for me.

I think it was after this period that I developed my dislike for brown leather casual shoes.

Remember the phase in the late 90s where everybody started slitting the side of their jeans at the bottom? For some stupid reason, I embraced this, and began to slit the bottoms of all my jeans. It carried over to a pair of wide-legged grey khakis I often sported, which I ended up wearing to work one day at Big 5 (where a shirt and tie was required). My boss was not happy about the "sloppy" look, and told me to go home and change. I struck a deal with him, and told him if I didn't sell a treadmill that day (the only item on which sales people got a commission) then I would never wear them again. If I did sell one, I could wear them as often as I wanted.

I sold two treadmills that day.
