  • Our local community is building out a fiber network right now. The buildout currently goes literally to the house right next to ours with no plans in place to include our house, so I’m stuck with Xfinity too for at least the next 6 months. Frustrating to see it so close yet so far away.

    • I don't use Xfinity for cable TV - just broadband. Google fiber is coming to our neighborhood some day but it's probably another year+ out. Xfinity Gigabit Ethernet for $90 a month with no contract is as good as I can get and I don't really have any complaints about it.

      • The Google Fiber crew is marking up the neighborhood this week and will start digging trenches next week. Should be available mid April. I can't wait to ditch Xfinity.

My local town fiber came through the bottom half of the neighborhood and got it installed about six months ago. My house is literally next to a house that has access to it. No plans yet for it to come through the rest of the neighborhood.

          • We had a company called "Open Fiber" come through our neighborhood and lay down fiber several months ago, killing grass in many places. When they finished, there was a big cable sticking out of the ground every 10 or 20 houses. I kept waiting for them to come around and do something with these, but nothing has been done and they are still sticking out of the ground. I am not sure if this is completely normal or if the company went out of business and we are stuck with cables popping out of our lawns here and there.

My parent's house is in a similar situation. They have a long lane that leads to their house from the main road. They stopped at the neighbors. I'm not sure its worth it for them to connect a single house that far from the road. I wonder why they have no plans to continue into your neighborhood?
