So...my old desktop may have given up the ghost. It is about 7 years old and has been given me issues for the last year. Like a good guy...I never went and purchased a portable drive to copy all of my files over.

I am headed to buy a new desktop today. I have had issues in the past trying to hook up an old HD as a slave on a new PC.

Current computer is Windows XP Premium. New computer will be Windows 7.

What do I need to do to use the old HD? If I remember correctly I just switch the jumper on the new HD to master and on the old HD to slave?

Do I have to make any changes on the BIOS?

Good thing I have nothing planned today.

You might run into problems doing this if your old drive is IDE and your new computer only supports SATA. If that is the case, you might have to get something like this

You could always turn your old drive into a portable drive.

Assuming your old drive is 3.5" and IDE (likely given the age) any one of these should work.

Tech Issue:

Last week our two chromebooks stopped connecting to our primary WiFi. All other devices still connect to the WiFi--ipads, phones, windows laptops, TV, apple TV, nintendo switch. A reboot of the chromebooks did nothing. They list our network as an option, but when I try to connect, it spins and spins until it says it could not connect because "network out of range."

Today I fired up a hotspot on my phone and the chromebook connected to that lickety split. I updated the ChromeOS, but to no avail. It still won't connect to our main wiFi.

Normally I wouldn't care, but these are the computers my two youngest use to do their schooling. So not having internet access on them is really cramping our style. I've done some research about changing the channel of our WiFi, but I can't seem to access our wifi modem/router to change the channel. I'm no tech guy, so that is probably above my paygrade.

Any ideas?

I am not sure what changing the wifi channel will do for you unless your neighbor is using the same channel with some overpowering wifi setup. Usually when something like this happens it is due to the ARP table being screwed up on the router or the device that is using the same IP address as some other device (again a problem with the router for assigning the same IP address). Did you try rebooting the router as well? That should clear its ARP table and maybe get it to used a different wifi channel, if it is indeed a problem with your neighbor using the same channel. Also, reboot the chrome books at the same time

Arris modem (can't remember the model number off the top of my head, but it's 6183 or something like that.
Eero router.

But, Mrs. D reports that today, after a week of the CBs not connecting, they suddenly both connected and have been working all day. WTF?

My kids/wife call or text me all the time with tech issues. In almost every case, when I get home and try it out the issue doesn’t repeat itself. They all think I’m magic and I’m starting to believe it myself. It hasn’t happened a handful of times. It’s happened several dozen times. So let me know if I need to just show up and try it as I might be able to fix it just by touching the laptops.
