I live half time in NYC and half time in Rio. I don't drive. But i do have an old car.

I enjoy earning interest, not paying it

I won't lie--once my student loans are paid off, I will be upgrading from my Corolla. Depreciation be damned but I want to be able to enjoy a fine auto and I am attracted to a higher-performing engine than 130 hp @ 6000 rpm and 125 lb-ft of torque @ 4200 rpm.

However, I don't think it's fair to mischaracterize the statements of NorthwestUteFan, Viking, and others. They're not saying they "enjoy driving old cars," they're saying they don't care either way.

Some people really don't care (even if they should care--one of the partners at my firm drives an old Accord--I wonder what potential clients think when he picks them up at the airport in that?) and I don't fault them for it.

You're right some people don't care. And to others they really care. My old boss was a millionaire but lived in a very modest split level home. It's actually the same home he's lived in since he moved his young family to Virginia 25 years ago. He's never upgraded or moved. There is nothing flashy about his attire or anything but he loves his car. He paid over a $100k for his 7 series. And then he has a beautiful Breitling that he wears daily. He told me more than once that those are the only two ostentatious purchases he has ever made and that he'd make them again.

That's a lot of posts from people that don't care either way.

Everyone has their thing that they like. The example Surface just posted about his boss's car and watch....would you tell your boss, "I've had an inexpensive Casio for 10 years, a watch is a watch, they all tell time, it is paid for, you are a sucker!" Of course not. It comes off sounding like a moran at best, a jealous cheapskate at worst.

BTW, you will enjoy your upgrade. Good for you. Enjoy life.

DDD, do you find John McCrea's statements in praise of old cars' cabin designs to be insincere?

So how new does your vehicle have to be to be enjoyable and cool? I think I might still be in the cutoff date with an 08, but with 90,000 miles maybe not...

Should I run out today and buy?

90,000 miles on an 08 is definitely not cool.

I better head to the dealership. It is raining so maybe I can talk him down in price a little. (Is talking the guy down in price cool or should I just pay sticker?)

Trips, I hope you haven't pulled the trigger on that 87 CRX yet. Maybach now has a Chromed model.
