I was just thinking the same thing! The worst part is Surfah has an English degree from BYU.

        • Just filled up today with 87 octane fuel. Not much of a line. I think it was $2.699 per gallon

              What was the octane rating?

Gasoline always seems to be pricier here than on the Wasatch front.

So I have a simple request for everyone who gripes about a thread title: Feel free to gripe, but when you do so, please offer what you would have used as an alternative. If you are so confident it is bad, it should be a simple matter for you to come with a better alternative. TIA.

Yes, the shortage is largely fear driven. Harvey apparently had an impact on about only 17% on the supply of the gas being refined. We would have been all fine except one of the local TV news channels ran a report that there might be a shortage due to the hurricane, the long holiday weekend, all those BYU fans making their way to the game down in NOLA, etc. Needless to say, everyone, it seems, ran out immediately and filled their cars up. Now it seems everyone is also filling up their bathtubs with gas and hoarding as much fuel as possible. This is a perfect example how fake news becomes real news.

Fortunately for us our car runs on diesel and not gasoline. We just stopped at the shell just around the corner from our home and found, while they were completely out of every grade of gas, they had plenty of diesel and had no line.

Yep... Let the nationwide hoarding begin:

Gas prices spike again, now up 17 cents since Harvey

Gas prices spiked overnight and are up about 17 cents a gallon since Hurricane Harvey struck Texas.

The national average price for a gallon of regular jumped nearly 7 cents to $2.52 a gallon on Friday, according to AAA. And price spikes are even more severe in some Southern states.

Prices in Texas jumped 10 cents overnight, and are up 21 cents over the last week. North Carolina prices jumped 11 cents overnight and are up 27 cents over the last week. Georgia prices jumped nearly 12 cents overnight and are up about 29 cents for the week.

Stations started running out of gasoline in Dallas following a social media reports that there was a Harvey-inspired shortage, even though one expert said the run on gasoline there was caused by the drivers panicking and topping off. Supplies might have lasted if drivers conserved what they already had in the tank.

Gas futures shot up more than 10% Thursday, the last day of trading for contracts that promised September delivery of gasoline. Prices for the October futures early Friday were slightly lower, suggesting traders don't expect the higher prices to last. But there will likely be continued pain at the pump as the many of the refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast struggle to get back online.

                              • Just filled up 89 Octane at $2.75. I think last Saturday it was $2.30 or $2.40. Harvey just took $4 out of my pocket.
