iPod Touch Broken Screen

For Christmas, we got my 15 year old daughter a new iPod Touch. She loved it, and got 20 good days out of it. Then, yesterday, she knocked it off of a counter and the screen cracked. Not just one crack, but about 20. It still works fine, aside from the screen.

I've looked around a little online, and it appears that you can buy a kit to repair yourself, but it is not easy. Anyone have experience with this? My #1 plan right now is to send my daughter into the Apple store and have her cry her eyes out while telling them her father will beat her if he finds out she broke her ipod.

That seems to be the case for nearly every electronic device on the market today.

Not my Ego. When I cracked the screen and took it to the Sprint store they fixed it for thirty five bucks.

I replaced the glass on my wife's iPhone once.... Parts: $11. Labor: vikings game.

You might be able to find someone local to replace the glass for around $50 by looking around on Craigslist or something.

I think a few of our CUFers here have done it. Doesn't Camleish or 1137coug replace these on the side? I think Uncle Ted has replaced one also.

1337 can have it done in about ten minutes. i think he has a place where he buys the screens wholesale too. i would boardmail him.

Basically anyone can fix their gadgets by carefully following a guide on ifixit.com, but this one looks rough.

Unfortunately, apple made the new iPod touches and iPhone 4's like they made the original iPhone, with the digitizer, glass and LCD fused together, which forces you to replace the entire display assembly instead of just the broken piece. When I replaced it on my moms iPhone 4, I got the part for $90.

Maybe for his birthday next year you can fix it by putting it in DFU (or recovery) mode and reloading iOS. Of course, to get all his apps and stuff back he will need to restore from a backup. He has backups, right?
