If you do switch to Verizon/iPhone then you might want to wait until the iPhone 5. The wireless modem chip that apple is using in the Verizon iPhone 4G is actually a dual band (both CDMA and GSM) but they didn't include a SIM slot and GSM antenna for form factor reasons. The iPhone 5 should fix this and the same phone will most likely be sold at both AT&T and Verizon. The advantage is having GSM it is nice for traveling in Europe and such.

(Now this is public knowledge I can talk about it.)

You've got to give me more than that, Ted. I don't travel to Europe that frequently.

How's this: Wait for the iPhone 5 to be released, because then the iPhone 4 will be cheaper. That's my plan (assuming I can convince myself to go to a touch-screen keyboard).

Dude, with the iPhone is all about the apps... You can always find an app or five that do X on the iPhone. In fact, a couple of those apps actually work pretty well. You can usually find an app on Android (or may be not) that with do X but it may not look quite right because it was actually developed for some slightly different hardware. The app was most likely originally targeted for the iPhone then adapted for Android. In most cases, however, Android has your app too. With RIM/blackberry you have all your business apps at least. If you have Windows Phone 7 good luck. There is a good reason why AAPL is at a all time high and Verizon is having record sale numbers.

Yeah but like I said, I use my iPad for much of the stuff I used to do on my smart phone (browsing at church, etc.). Not too many apps on my phone that I use regularly and they seem to work just fine on Android. When I first got my Android device I was perturbed that many of the iPhone apps were not available on the Android but I think that gap has closed substantially.

This is all good. Competition benefits everyone.

Staying with AT&T? AT&T says thank you with 1000 roll over minutes.

But he said they were packed. A big part of it he said was the launch of new phones and their $50 off any phone deal. I thought that was interesting.

I think you have to subscribe to the Wall Street Journal to see this, but it is an interesting analysis of the U.S. and worldwide smartphone market:

                        The Phone Wars Aren't Over

                        Also, this is pretty fascinating:

                        Google Elbows Apple, Woos Publishers

Google Inc. fired another salvo in its broadening competition with Apple Inc., opening a payment system for digital content that will let publishers keep a bigger share of revenues than a service launched by Apple this week.

Google's new One Pass service allows consumers to use one account to pay for access to multiple publications on the Web and across a range of mobile devices.

The move comes one day after Apple laid out a subscription service for content sold through its iPhone and iPad devices, an offering that some publishers greeted skeptically. Apple would take a 30% cut on sales of subscriptions in its iTunes App Store.
The one thing that makes me reluctant to buy into iPhone and iPad technology is that Apple is acting like Microsoft used to, and has adopted a control-freak approach. The technology is beautiful, but I don't like the control.

I am a little leery of Google too, but less than of Apple. I'll never forgive them for making MS-DOS and Windows the operating systems most of the world have had to deal with for 25 years now, mainly because Apple execs were control freaks about their own system.

So I am glad Google is keeping Apple honest. We need a third big player in the market.

                              I am getting an iPhone...

So I think I have decided that I am going to get an iPhone. I really like my Android phone, but would like to try the iPhone. I figure if I dont like the iPhone, I can always sell it and go back to Android.

Now the question is ATT or Verizon?

I keep hearing Verizon's network is bigger/better, but how much so? AT&T has faster data, but Verizon is unlimited....

AT&T also has a unlimited mobile to any mobile deal going on right now which is pretty huge since all of my family is on T-mobile and they are the majority of the people I call. This would allow me to get a plan with a smaller amount of minutes.

I think I am leanning toward AT&T but everyone always complains about their network...

Anyone have a preferance to one over the other?

It all depends on the network where you will be using your phone. Where I am, I have very few complaints about AT&T. I drop about 5 call per year, and the data coverage is good. In a situation like mine, I would definitely go with AT&T, as the data speeds are faster than Verizon and you can access data while on the phone. If you live in a place like Oxcoug, where AT&T sucks, or if you travel to the sticks a lot, then I think Verizon is the answer.
