The small print on Verizon's iPhone contract...
It seems the author of this article is not happy that he switched to Verizon or something. On the day that iPhone preorders began last week, Verizon quietly revised its policy on data management: Any smartphone customer who uses an “extraordinary amount of data” will see a slowdown in their data-transfer speeds for the remainder of the month and the next billing cycle.
It’s a bit of a bait-and-switch. One of Verizon’s selling points for its version of the iPhone is that it would come with an unlimited data plan — a marked contrast to AT&T, which eliminated its unlimited data plans last year.
Verizon incidentally announced a plan for “data optimization” for all customers, which may degrade the appearance of videos streamed on smartphones, for example.
[...]
And here we thought Verizon’s network technology was better-prepared than AT&T to handle a big crowd of iPhone customers. While our initial tests showed that Verizon was better at making and holding phone calls, its data speeds are slower than AT&T’s. The company must be worried about the effects of an influx of iPhone customers — otherwise, why would it throttle bandwidth like this?
[...]
Given its actions, Verizon may be better at holding phone calls, but as a broadband company it sucks at keeping promises.Last edited by Uncle Ted; 02-08-2011, 05:29 AM."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Do people use their cell phones for phones anymore? It seems like more and more my communication with others is non verbal. Really the only phone calls I make are to set appointments, occasional calls for Church, CS calls (though I typically use a live chat or email option if available), and talking with family. My data usage on my phone far outweighs my minutes usage. I wonder if this isn't the growing trend and what happens then to these data plans? It's silly, but if I am being honest my phone is rarely used as a phone.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostThe small print on Verizon's iPhone contract...

At this point, about the only calls I take on my cell are from my wife. And even then, I don't always pick up. Just send me a text.Originally posted by Surfah View PostDo people use their cell phones for phones anymore? It seems like more and more my communication with others is non verbal. My wife and I are on a family plan and I think we have the plan with the second fewest minutes. Maybe the fewest. 600 or thereabouts?Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I use mine while commuting, to stay in touch with my office or to talk with clients, or maybe to be on conference calls. But you're right, I use it much more for messaging, or even to check this board during downtime (in airports, for example).Originally posted by Surfah View PostDo people use their cell phones for phones anymore? I don't talk on my phone much or send many text messages and, therefore, have the 600 minutes/200 text messages plan. I actually used the textfree app to send and receive most of my text messages. I do, however, used the heck out of my data plan (thank you AT&T for grandfathering me with unlimited). I am most likely the reason AT&T decided to go to a metered data plan and drop unlimited. I stream pandora and tunein radio in the car, I tether my laptop on the road, and even watch a little netflix thanks to "3G unrestrictor". I am surprised AT&T hasn't send me a letter encouraging me to switch to Verizon.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostAt this point, about the only calls I take on my cell are from my wife. Verizon is also coming out with the 4G HTC Thunderbolt. BTW, I'm still holding out for a new phone and the 4G HTC is looking more tempting. Given Apple's history, I wouldn't be surprised if an Apple 4G phone is released during the late Summer or Fall right after a huge number of sales of Verizon's Iphone.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Now that I have an iPad I rarely use my phone for games or browsing or apps. Primarily calls, text, e-mail, contact list, and wifi tether. Oh, and as a GPS device for navigation. Each of these are equally good and in some cases much better (wifi tether, GPS) on the Android platform.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostAdmit that you went the wrong direction with android and then get the apple product."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? My Sprint contract is coming up and I am considering a switch to Verizon/iPhone, but so far I just can't see a compelling set of reasons to do so.
Weren't you mocking the whole iPhone thing a year or two ago? What happened to your Blackberry?"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I still have a blackberry. I see no point in getting an iPhone, esp now that I use the iPad device. I still prefer an actual keyboard to a virtual one, although the iPad keyboard works just fine when I am using it. No problems.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostFunny.

Since I have never had an iPhone, I cannot comment on ATTs allegedly poor service. My BB is ATT, but I havent noticed any problems. Then again, I dont really use it for data-intensive activities that you normally assoicate with iPhone stuff.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.
