  • Favorite College Courses

The "Tales of Failing College Courses" thread got my interest. So I decided to start a thread about Favorite College Courses. Could be Elective or Major courses but I'm more curious about the Elective courses.

    Here's mine:
Theatre and Cinema 117 (I think that's the course number). It was an intro to Film class and we watched movies that emphasized a particular part of film (cinematography, editing, music, direction, acting, etc.). It opened my eyes to the art of film making and I almost changed my major to Film Studies as a result.

    Runner up:
American Heritage 100. Realize I might be the only one to mention that course but I did enjoy it. It did occur to me that the majority of my classmates at that time felt the opposite.

English 223 - Introduction to the English Language, taught by Dallin D. Oaks. I loved that class.

I also loved my History of the English Language class, though the professor wasn't as good as Oaks. I still reminisce about the Great Vowel Shift!
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I can barely remember undergrad, though I really liked almost all my poly sci classes.

In law school favs were antitrust, estate planning and individual income taxation.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

        Intermediate golf.

Stats 321 (or whatever my probability class was). Hands down the best teacher I had at BYU. I was disappointed with the quality of instruction as a whole at BYU, but this professor was a big exception. He was a 70-something year old guy with a big Missouri drawl on the verge of retirement, but you could tell he loved to teach rather than being a teacher that was primarily there to do research and grudgingly taught due to their contractual obligations.

I didn't have estate planning, but the other two you mentioned make my worst classes list.

I had BoM from Oaks. Didn't care much for him. Never took any English classes from him. He was always out of breath and cheeks were flushed, I assume from hoofing it over from the JKHB to the JSB.

My favorite class ever was MComm 320H. Most practical class I have ever had. I still use notes from that class to this day.

Yeah, I loved that about him. He was always disheveled, shirt partially untucked, hadn't had a haircut in months. I'm not sure about BoM, but he was really in his element in his English Language classes.

Coaching Football by Mel Olson. Guest taught by Bronco Mendenhall, Gary Crowton, Brian Mitchell, Dick Felt, Paul Tidwell, Mike Empey, Robbie Bosco and Lance Reynolds.

Classmates included Jake Kuresa, Matt Payne, Ofa Moheateau, Todd Watkins and Joe Griffin. Good class.

Art 100 - Life Drawing*. Four hours of drawing nudes. What's not to love about that!

*I now teach the same course

If I had to pick just one, it would far and away be antitrust. I would have taken that class every semester if I could. My prof was brilliant and very well known in the field -- learning from him was a thrill.

I had a bowling class which was awesome. I was on scholarship, so I didn't have to pay...but it was fabulous. A couple of cute girls, a couple of buddies of mine...and it was just hanging out at the bowling alley. I ended up averaging around 180 by the end of the year. If things had gone differently during the course of my life, I could be simply 'BowlingStar' on this forum.

When you say nudes, don't you mean, students in leotards? (At least at BYU)
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I may be sick, but I also enjoyed Antitrust. The prof was great and made that class enjoyable. I also liked Civ Pro (Floyd was one of my favorite profs).

I didn't go to BYU. When I say nude I mean nekkid; birthday suit; in the buff. And while the arteest's at BYU may have drawn models in leotards, in the evenings, after class, students joined their Prof's at Provo High school for community life drawing classes where the models were au natural.

Recreation Management and Youth Leadership 123..

Basically a class in which we just did a bunch of outdoor activities. We went snowshoing, skiing, camping, etc. etc. Good times.
