    Ipad questions...

When it came out, I thought the IPad was a stupid concept. Too big to carry around easily, and lacking a lot of the capabilities of a real laptop. Why split the difference? Just go with either a smart phone or a notebook PC - whichever meets your needs the best.

Then I played with one for a few hours - they're pretty cool.

Questions for those who have one:

Does the amount of memory really matter? It'll be for my wife. She can use it to keep track of her work schedule & emails by synching with her work's wifi network. And the Ipad is an authorized machine for logging onto her work's remote site to pull down emails from home (they have very specific requirements about exact machine configurations for logging into their remote network). But it'll primarily be a websurfing toy for home. Is there a significant functional difference between the 16GB/32GB/64GM RAM?

How is it as a streaming device (using WiFi)? I assume it's good, but my BiL didn't want to download streaming apps for Netflix because his is for work. So I really don't know how it works for streaming.

Is it possible to hack it and make it 3G capable on a network other than AT&T? If so, I'd be interested in a 3G capable machine. If not, I think I'd just go with the WiFi version.

Is it Skype-capable? Webcam & mic built in? We've just really started using skype - it's a lot easier & better now than it was when I first heard about it and tried it out.

Any other comments/suggestions would be appreciated...

Memory: I went with 64GB so that I could put more movies on. My music library alone is ~16 GB.

Streaming with wifi: Works beautifully. I don't recall a single hiccup streaming NetFlix on my home network. Ditto for the hotel wifi last week.

Streaming via wifi works really well. Bulletproof.

the ipad has no webcam so you can use the text portion of skype but no webcam.

No front facing camera, yet. It does have a mic and I have skyped from everywhere without a problem.

If the primary use is just going to be websurfing then the memory shouldn't matter much. If you are planning to load it up with movies and music then you will want more flash memory than the 16GB.

Some people have been able to make the iPad 3G work (unlock) with t-mobile but I believe only in edge mode. Using edge is hardly worth it. If you want an iPad that works (natively) on non-AT&T networks then you might want to wait until sometime in the first half of next year.

The iPad doesn't have a built-in webcam yet. I have heard that some apps like skype will support external bluetooth webcams.

In regards to the network, there is a Verizon iPad coming in January.

BTW, if later you wished that you had a netbook instead of an iPad there is a case for that...

If you wait a few months, you can get the new ipad, which rumors say is going to have front and rear-mounted cameras, and higher resolution. I'd expect similar improvements to what the iphone had earlier this year.

I think it's also a pretty solid assumption that it will be compatible with Verizon, at least.

Since it seems Statman's questions have been answered, I'd simply like to pose another since I can't find the other iPad thread.

Has anyone purchased a wall mount for the ipad? I'd like one for the kitchen that comes out of the wall so that movies can be watched, recipes read, and music enjoyed as food is cooked. I saw this one on amazon:

                    [ame="http://www.amazon.com/iMount-Petite-iPad-Wall-Mount/dp/B003YVSI7Y/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1292265737&sr=8-6"]Amazon.com: iMount Petite - 17" iPad Wall Mount: Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41bwdzA3TDL.@@AMEPARAM@@41bwdzA3TDL[/ame]

However, there aren't many reviews so I'd like to hear thoughts from people that I actually "know".

Any recommendations on an iPad case? I would like a decent looking leather one, but not the attache style where I have to slide the iPad in and out every time I use it.

                            http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...d=&search=ipad

I'm thinking of getting this and trying it for the next month or so until the new one is announced (right?). If I like it, I'll stay with it. If I want more memory or 3G, then I can upgrade and sell this. If I don't ever use it, I can probably sell it for about the same, no?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Here is another option: buy a refurb direct from Apple, and if you dont like it, return it.

Your current approach saddles you with a twice used device that you would have to bother to list and sell with no promises of being able to do that. If you buy from Apple, you can return it on Day 30 and walk out the door.
