I grew fond of Taco Smell from my days of being a vegetarian. The 7-layer burrito, when made right, is delish! But about half the time it is made wrong and tastes terrible. How do they screw up something as simple as a 7-layer burrito? They squirt several of the layers out of caulking guns in parallel lines that run the length of the burrito. Cool. Once it come time to roll up the burrito, if they roll perpendicular to the squirted lines they all mush together into one tasty goo. However if they roll parallel to the lines, each ingredient gets isolated into its own spot in the burrito, meaning that one bite is a mouth of guac, the next a mouth of sour cream, the next a mouth of beans, and so on. I would gladly pay an extra couple of cents per burrito to get it rolled correctly. This aint sushi folks. Roll freaking perpendicular to the squirted ingredients!

And in the continued tradition of street food going upscale, there's another new place in the neighborhood called "Barrio" which is doing tacos like Smoky Pork Shoulder with golden raisins and sliced almonds and Spiced Duck Confit with dried cherry-ancho salsita. They also have Churros and Xocalatl Chocolate, which are apparently quite delicious, so I think I'm going to check it out for happy hour one of these days. My distaste for the bastardization of Mexican food will have to be put aside for a moment.Last edited by MarkGrace; 02-14-2009, 06:36 PM.So Russell...what do you love about music? Let's be honest. Taco Bell and Del Taco are closer to real Mexican food than just about anything you get can get in this state ..."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

Fewer lemmings in Draper these days. Dang, they got over their heads with their mortgages and expensive cars? Shucks.Originally posted by thesaint258 View PostThis is good news for Draper. I'm sure all of the lemmings who live there will enjoy forcing themselves to eat crappy food just for the sake of following the fad and wanting to be like California.

I do think Utah has two good things going though:
1. The Pie
2. Mom and Pop Burger and Shake joints"It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

Also, my wife and I have taken to calling Cafe Rio / Bajio, etc. "Ute-Mex". And that is not a complimentary term."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

El Paisa in West Valley. Owned by a chilango. The molcajete is awesome. Go on a night when the mariachi band is rocking and all the mexi's are getting drunk. Good times!Originally posted by FMCoug View PostLet's be honest. Taco Bell and Del Taco are closer to real Mexican food than just about anything you get can get in this state ...

If you are ever around Ogden, check out Mi Puebla on 26th. No mexi's getting drunk. Owner is from Puebla and moved to Utah after he joined the church. When I left Utah he was just made branch president. Their mole is ridiculous. They also own the panaderia adjacent to restaurant.
Sorry, couldn't find a website for this one. Apparently they have second spot in Layton, but I have no idea what it's like.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
