    Watched someone get a ticket

I saw someone get a ticket this morning and it made me feel good.

I have to go through two four-way stops to get to a main road on my way to work. The one at the end of my street is watched about once a week by a city police officer, usually sitting in a patrol car. I see people blow right through that stop sign regularly on the larger of the two roads and am annoyed that I can do nothing about it and I haven't witnessed them catching anybody there.

But this morning as I was on my way through there, and about to make my left turn, I passed the patrol car and made sure that I came to a full stop (which I always do, of course). So I made my turn and passed two cars coming the other way, wondering if they would stop properly or get to visit with the police officer. Watching in my mirror, I didn't even see brake lights from the first car as it went right on through the stop sign. And three seconds later I see the red and blue lights as the police officer is chasing them down.

It was all I could do to keep from turning around, passing the offender, and giving the officer a fist pump for nailing another offender.

I don't always enjoy seeing people get nailed by the police, but sometimes, like when they catch carpool lane violators or people speeding through school zones, or stop sign runners like today, all I can think is "way to go officer".

Is it a sign of my increasing age that as often as not when I see a speeder coming the other way heading right into a radar trap, instead of warning them with flashing lights or a slow down signal, I sometimes think that they deserve it and enjoy seeing them get caught?

As a fellow motorcycle rider, my greatest fear on the road is someone blowing through a stop sign or red light. Those are the kind of things that you have a hard time avoiding regardless of how careful you are, and mean sure death or severe handicap when on a motorcycle.

Most times it is done without the driver noticing. I have tracked down people I have seen blowing through stop signs or red lights and let them know there inattention put other people's lives at risk.

I don't care too much about car pool lane offenders. I don't worry about speeding too much unless it is clearly a hazard (50 in a 25 with kids nearby).

Carpool offenders really bug me. They are really bad here in AZ. I didn't see it near as much when I lived in CA.

In CA, I worry about the motorcycles that drive in between two lanes of cars to get ahead in heavey stop and go traffic. It seems so unsafe and dangerous to me that I honestly wonder why it is legal. Of course, I witnessed a horrible motorcycle accident in high school that left a lasting image in my mind, and I always get a little jumpy when motorcycles are around me when I am driving.

More to your point, I get really annoyed when people blow through stop signs too, and it happens a lot in my community. I was almost hit by someone just today who didn't stop. My community has lots of roundabouts and there are constant problems with people speeding up and not wanting to yield to the cars already in the middle with the right of way.

It looks more dangerous to those who have never done it than it actually is. Still, some riders "lane share" in a dangerous manner. I only do it when I can do it safely. It makes Friday afternoon rush hour traffic much easier to deal with.

This is the truth, however when I was first internalizing the width of my bike, I confess I adjusted about two mirrors in that first year. I haven't adjusted anyone's mirror in more than five years now, in more than 25,000 miles (I do about 5000 miles/year).
