Something else I didn't know about Carter. After his presidency he was instrumental in eliminating most Guinea worm cases in the world. If you don't know what that is, google pictures of it. Pretty gross.

I think the measure of his entire life makes up for any deficiencies in his presidency many times over.

Yeah, I remember the signing of that treaty that really well. Very controversial at the time.

That's an interesting read. I remember when this happened, but I didn't know the back story.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostI didn't know anything about the Panama Canal treaty that Carter signed. Interesting history:

I also wrote an article at Morrill Middle School about the election when Ronald Reagan won in a landslide. Leading up to the election, I ran a mock election at our school. Not surprisingly, Jimmy Carter got more votes at my school in San Jose.
I thought he was a terrible president at the time because I was raised in a conservative home. Now I wonder if he just wasn't a great fit for the time.
Regardless, I've been a fan of him as a person for quite some time now. I almost made it to one of his Sunday school lessons, but missed the boat. We could use more people like him.

IMHO, the best ex president that we have ever had! I don't think he did a particularly good job as president, though he did have some accomplishments (Camp David Accords), but some of problems were due to circumstances, but what a post presidency!Originally posted by All-American View PostJimmy Carter.
As an aside the Carter/Ford election was the first time I was eligible to vote - absentee from the Language Training Mission. FTR I voted for Ford.

Farewell, Jimmy.Originally posted by All-American View PostJimmy Carter.
I'm old enough to remember when Carter beat Ford and when Reagan beat Carter. While I wouldn't have voted for Carter I think he was fundamentally a good and moral person and tried to do what he thought was right.

Greg Gumbel. Who,enjoyed his studio analysis and play by play? He did a Byu basketball game early in his career as play by play guy. When a game on network for byu wasn’t common.

Don't know him? Neither did I. But I knew of his influence. His work with cholera is believed to have saved 50 million lives. During cholera outbreaks IV fluids used to be thought superior to oral rehydration given the massive amounts of fluids lost by diarrhea. But in impoverished countries IV supplies and training were/are hard to come by. He helped institute an oral formula that was superior to IV fluid rescuscitation.
Not a lot of people in this era can claim to have done more for humanity.
