They have one version of everything. One kind of canned beans. One kind of corn. One kind of frozen pizza. It's just as often a name brand as an off brand, but it's not always the same brand. Its whatever huge bulk order they can get the best price on. And the special items are really hit or miss. Sometimes they've got absolutely amazing deals on stuff like TVs or PCs or laptops. It's a pretty amazing business model. There are now three or four clones of Aldi in Germany - clones that used to have much broader product lines, but that simply couldn't compete with Aldi on the one thing that matters most - price. WalMart considers Aldi the only competitor that they have to fear in the grocery business...
And yes, it is strange that Aldi and Trader Joes are owned by the same guy. But think about it - it's the same business model - one kind of everything - but targeted at a higher end of the market.

The problem with Aldi's here is that, with the weekly change of specials, they don't order enough to last more than a day! They had a stainless steel 4-burner gas grill for $189, and within 2 hours of the store opening they were sold out. My husband likes their Fit & Active line of food. Their produce is always way cheaper than any other store, even Sam's Club. Dole Pineapples are 99 cents! Eggs can be 49 cents for a dozen large. Milk is always cheaper too. I just hate going to 3 grocery stores with 3 little ones to get the best prices in town. Besides that, my grocery getter is a F150...so what I would save I waste on gas just to get there.Comment

I have an Aldi's within walking distance from our home and its fantastic. For staples items (Milk, cheese, veggies, fruit etc...) you can't beat the price. Its probably 75% of Kroger and Meijers. The pizza business is cut-throat, especially if you do deliveries. I did six years at Pizza Hut as a shift manager/driver, and I went to enough training meanings and had to understand the financials enough to know that the good money comes from fast-dime repeat customer business. Pricepoint is the killer, and Little Caesar's $5 hot n' ready is killing some markets.
But, if you get big contracts (school lunch, MTC, Cougareat, Cannon Center, Marriott Center [I still hate you, Mick Hill], and Seven Peaks), you can make some serious scratch.
