  • What's up with Utah phones?

Do any of you know why, in Salt Lake, you have to dial the area code first to call next door? Who came up with that stupid idea?

It's because they added another area code that overlays the 801 area code. I've never actually used the other area code, but apparently it's there somewhere.
    Not that, sickos.

They had to add another area code and came up with this idea so everybody could keep there old area code.

It was either this or split the 801 area code and give half of it a new phone number. Your call as to which is better.

Okay, so I've had three different area codes for my home phone without changing the number. It started out as 415, then it was 510, and now it is 925. I've never had to add a prefix to call anybody in the same area code.

Why couldn't Utah be the same way if you're calling a number in the same area code? If you know that the number you're calling has the other area code, then you know that you have to punch in the extra numbers.

In our ward we have a few people in the 510 area code, not counting various cell phones with a number of different area codes, often depending on where the person works. We realize that we need to add the area code for them, but only for them.

I still think it's majorly stupid to have to include the area code when you dial another number in your same area code. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Okay, now I feel a little bit better.

Utah isn't the only state that does this. I haven't had a land line for about 7 years now and just about every number I call is stored in my cell phone with the area code so it's not a big deal. I am sure the proliferation of cell phones heavily influenced their decision.

I forgot that phone numbers used to be 7 digits. We always dial the area code in Houston since there are 3 area codes just for the Houston area alone.

Yes, I remember the good ole days of dialing just 7 digits. DFW has like 3 or 4 area codes as well. My family has cell phones with three different DFW area codes.

With vonage, you can still do 7 digits. It implies the area code for you if you take a long time between the 7th and 8th digit.

Its because companies like Efax, Google Voice, Fax Pipe, etc came in and bought up every 801 number imaginable, so Utah had to get another area code. In fact I saw something that said there are 10x as many 801/435 phone numbers registered as there are people in the state of utah.

This begs the question... Have any of you Wasatch Fronters EVER dialed a 385 number? I have never as much as seen a 385 number....

I don't have to do this with Vonage. I have an 801 number and when I dial other 801 numbers I don't have to dial the area code. In fact, until now I didn't even realize this was needed for others.
