    Crap. I'm a hack.

I'm not sure what you mean by taking a long time. I dial numbers on speed dial and have no problems.

He means that it waits for the 8th digit to be dialed and if it is not dialed within a certain ammount of time, it assumes it is a local call within your area code and includes the area code for you to route it.

You have to do this in the 541 area code of Oregon also. I'm not sure about the 503.

I haven't lived anywhere where 7 digits along will get you connected in about 8 years. I thought most places that weren't super uber rural were that way now.

I get that. I meant I'm not sure why he's doing it. Like I said, I have numbers on speed dial and there is no pause between the 7th and 8th number and I have no problems.

Yes, the 503 has an area code overlay with the 971 area code. Denver has been 10 digits for a long time with the 303 and 720 area codes while Seattle, Minneapolis and Phoenix have 3 area codes, though not overlays, and have to dial 10 digits.

I think you are just misunderstanding what he is saying. He's not pausing, he's just dialing 7 digits. He was only explaining how Vonage determines it.

You're right. I was misunderstanding. I can't count. I need to get some sleep.

In fact I saw something that said there are 10x as many 801/435 phone numbers registered as there are people in the state of utah.

For the record, I've never had a problems with it. I just assume it could happen, since there does need to be some assumptions there.

It' would actually be something like:

8*10^6 (for one area code) since you can't have a 0 or 1 as the first number

So that would be 8 million numbers or 16 million for 2 area codes.

I don't think it is unreasonable that the Wasatch front is using up all the first area code considering home phones, cell phones and business lines and around 2 million people along the wasatch front.

I doubt that services like Google Voice are taking a huge chuck of those.

Of course we are talking about Utah.........I remember growing up and smelling the dairy farm down the road and that was only 10 miles south of downtown.

In Norther Virginia, you have to dial 703 for all numbers because you also have Maryland and DC numbers that are local calls all with different area codes.
