I know I've raised this question here before, but I'm interested in hearing more opinions of the knowledgeable people here on trucks. I'm getting that much closer to buying one - in fact, as soon as my motorcycle is sold () I'm pulling the trigger.

I've narrowed my search down to three models: the Toyota Tacoma, the Toyota Tundra, and the Ford F-150.

(Yes, I know the Tacoma is sort of the odd man out there in terms of type of truck).

I love the Tacoma because of its off-road prowess, although I question how much off-road prowess I really need (bed size is a knock, though). Otherwise I'm leaning towards the Tundra with the Double Cab (not Crew Max). The F-150 is still in the running because I get special pricing through work.

Does anybody have any opinions on these trucks generally? I don't need something for construction or anything super special and tough, but I will use the 4x4 and probably the towing at some point.

I was deciding between the Tundra crew max and the F-150 crew cab. I liked the ride and power of the Tundra much more. I have loved my truck. When it crosses over 125 sometime next spring I'll probably be going back for seconds.

I love the new Ford Trucks. That's the one I'd go with. Best truck out there, IMO.

How heavy of towing are you expecting to do? If it is bigger than a utility trailer with some ATV's, I would look to an F-250. You can get the kig size bed for hauling things and they are one of the best towing vehicles IMO. Our Excursion is bascially an F-250 with a full length cab. We can tow our 22' trailer up canyons at 75-80 mph if we want.

Not very. The towing capacity of the Tacoma - the lowest of the group - is 6500 (I forget what the max tongue weight is) and I don't think we'll ever be up that high. Tundra with the 5.7L and the tow package will be more than I anticipate we need, unless we move to a farm or something.

I am assuming that you are looking at brand new? If that is the case, I don't think you would be dissatisfied with the F150 super crew...go with the lariat. Great looking truck, good power, good towing and the best selling truck in the last 27 years running.

I was going to say the same thing. You'd be surprised how soon you want a 3/4 ton if you have a 1/2 ton. Again, if all you'd ever tow is a utility trailer with a light load, you're probably fine. But if you think you'll ever be interested in a travel trailer, toy hauler, anything much at all, go to the 3/4 ton.

I had 2002 F-150 SuperCrew and loved it. But the two issues were bed size and towing capacity. You just can't do much "truck stuff" with a 1/2 ton.

In fact, I'm in the market for a 3/4 ton right now, having just sold my conversion van. Looking at older (7.3 engien) F-250/350 PowerStrokes.

How anyone could think of buying a Japanese truck baffles me. I can see a car but a truck? Geez Trucks are what Americans do best.

I can't think of an american truck that gets even close to the Tacoma in terms of off-road abilities. Jeeps and Hummers - but those aren't trucks (except for that stupid hummer truck thing). And my wife and I have a rule about Hummers - we refuse to be friends with anybody that owns one on the grounds that Hummer owners are idiots by default.

If I was looking for a serious towing/hauling truck, I'd be looking at the F-250/350s for sure. But I don't need that.

We've had at least a dozen times over the past six months when we have wished we had a truck to do things around the house or when we go camping or that sort of thing. Couple that with a couple of scary close calls I had on the bike - call it an increasing sense of my own mortality - and you have the result.

Interstinly, I am justifying the truck's poor mileage by planning on getting a motorcycle to commute to work during the summer. I told my wife the mileage woudl balance itself out.

I wouldn't commute on a bike without Houston-style HOV lanes. Texas drivers may be better than Utah drivers in the aggregate (I think so, at least), but they are all idiots when you are on a motorcycle.

I hated trucks until I had one. Now I can't imagine going back to a car/SUV.
