      What did they get?

We have had 3 vehicles broken into a total of 4 times in the 9.5 years we have lived in this house.

I would say it has roughly cost me 5k.

        Ouch.

The damage was minimal. They took my wife's iPod and of course broke a window to get in. The window is going to run us $200 out-of-pocket because the cost is below our insurance deductible. All told we're probably looking at $300 (the iPod is old, I can't imagine it's worth more than $100).

I know, it's not much. Put still a pain in the ass when you don't have $200 to blow on this kind of crap.

          I hear ya MG.

We had a check book stolen in one of the break-ins. They wrote 2700.00 worth of checks in 2 days at Albertsons. Apparently they don't ask for ID. It took me 3 months and 3 days off from work, but I got that squared away. Hated burning vacation days on that.

The reason my number (5k) is as high as it is...they broke into both cars at once. And they found the spare key to my Tundra in the other car. But they didn't steal the truck fortunatly.

But I had to pay 985.00 to have the truck re-keyed.

Was it a smash and grab? That happened to me last year. If so, you should know that you will get vastly different estimates on the repair of your window. My first few bids were in the $300 range. I decided to keep calling and found a guy that would do it for under $100 and he was willing to come to my house. Did a great job.

Doesn't the gall just astound you? I mean, who thinks like that? Walk by a car, see an ipod inside that you want, and think, I'll break that window and take it.

One year, during Christmas break, I, my niece, and my 4 yr old son were driving across the country back to Michigan. We had made the drive from Michigan to Utah in one big stretch and given that I was hallucinating driving down Parley's Canyon, I decided that wasn't very safe and opted to stop in Omaha on the way back. Woke up the next morning (New Year's Eve) to our window smashed in and my niece's suitcase stolen. There wasn't even anything good inside, but it was a pain in the arse to get my window fixed in a snowstorm on New Year's Eve in Omaha, all the while keeping my 4 yr old from melting down.

              I hate Omaha.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Maybe I should check around. I just called the company Geico recommended, as they said they had a discount program set up with these guys for their policy holders. The thought crossed my mind that this is just a referral set up and the discount wasn't really much of anything at all, but I just decided to go with it. Probably dumb.

What's strange is that they just broke a vent window, and that window still puts the person pretty far away from being able to reach the lock. I'm not sure I understand the logic. Also annoying is the fact that we have a secure garage.

This is the kind of car we have: http://www.familycar.com/RoadTests/T...0CorollaRF.jpg

They broke that sort of small triangular shaped window on the rear door. Kind of odd.

Yikes. I can't decide whether I should be worried about identity theft issues. There wasn't a lot of personal information in there, but our glovebox definitely had our car registration, insurance cards, etc., that have our full names and what not. I guess there's not much other information beyond that, but you still get a little worried.

That would be a low priority concern to me, maybe it's just me though. Car registration and insurance cards have nothing more than your names and address, info that's already in a phone book and on every personal check you write and hand to strangers.

What's funny (or not funny) is that my wife never wants to leave it in the car -- she's always telling me to bring it in the house or whatever. I've constantly told her that no one is going to go through the trouble to break into our car for an iPod that is 3-4 years old.

You can bet I heard an "I told you so" this morning.

And it was probably just "the look" too. I can recognize that look from across crowded rooms.
