LOL? Not being a Newsom fan, I hadn't heard/read his comment. But Ted, check out any neutral source concerning violent crime in the U.S. (see, e.g., the FBI) over the past decade (which would include eight non-pandemic years) and I doubt you'll find a single year in which Texas's violent crime rate wasn't higher than in most states or worse than the national average.. Still, I'm glad it brought you some mirth, even if inapt.

                • Whataburger isn’t great unless you are eating a honey butter chicken biscuit.

while I miss the mountains, I’ve loved Houston. The summers are brutal but 8 months out of the year the weather is great. Everything around me is green. We have palm trees and banana trees in our backyard. MJ grows stuff year round in her garden. Housing is cheap and wages are equivalent to California. I can fly anywhere in the world direct and we have some of the best food in the US. Also, Houston is considered the most diverse city in the USA.

as for crime, no one on this board really has to worry about that. There’s a lot of crime in Houston but it’s not in the middle class suburbs. My pocket of Houston is little suburbia with very low crime. What happens in the third ward really has no impact on me since it’s like 40 miles away. Even Greenspoint, which is crime riddled and about 15 miles away, really has no impact on me because I spend most of my leisure time in the woodlands or the vintage or on my own suburbs.

                    • my daughter and her husband put an offer on a small, mediocre, house in a less than desirable west jordan neighborhood - the house was listed at $499k, they were willing to go as high as $520. house sold for $580k. They make better money than most couples in their age range and are having a devil of a time with this house search. I have no clue how most young people are supposed to make it work in this market.

They should move to Houston where they can buy a nice house for $350K and they’ll make at least 20% more in salary.

My son and his wife bought a condo 2 years ago - before the latest housing bubble began - for a pretty reasonable price. Overall it's been a pretty reasonable investment for them. Now they're looking at potentially moving out of state, and thinking they might sell it to help pay for something else. Originally they thought they'd keep it long-term as a rental. Now I think they've decided with housing prices going up everywhere they'll have to sell it to get in somewhere else.

I can't even stand to look at how much the market and screamed up and up. Rental market is not far behind, of course. We've got an apartment in our basement that our other married son has been living in since he got married. We make him pay a little rent - but he and his wife have been looking around at other places. Honestly, while they're still in school it just feels like they're stuck. I couldn't imagine being a young couple paying rent and thinking I'd never ever qualify for a home.
