Sweeping generalizations; I am making them

I'm going to make one now. It is based on 24 years of driving I-5 and concerns the left coast. When it comes to speeding on the west coast, Washington drivers are second to none in my book. I'm talking the kind of speeding where you see a dot in your rear view mirror and seconds later that dot goes by like you're standing still. The kind of speeding that makes you think someone is going to get killed. Maybe they just can't wait to get the hell out of California but I'm telling you, every time a car just blows my doors off it's got Washington plates. I'm curious if a guy like HFN who drives I-5 a ton would agree with me.

Yes its true. I drive I-5 in Oregon to the tune of about 40K a year. But here's the deal. About 15% of traffic on I-5 in Oregon are cars either going to California from Washington, or the other way around. Oregon is just 300 miles you need to get out of the way, so yes, with less highway patrol as in the past, you will see the long haul cars hitting 85+ quite often.

Somehow I didn't think of 85 mph when I read Steel's post.

85+ is 30+ mph over the speed limit in much of his state though so I can see where he's coming from. Plus he agrees with me, so my sweeping generalization has gained another warrior for truth.

I grew up in Spokane and don't find it to be the same as driving in western Washington. People are just lousy drivers in Spokane. The freeways have such deep ruts in Spokane that you can drive without steering the car.

Keep in mind that the ridiculously low speed limit in Oregon is 55 mph and around the Terwilliger curves in PDX it is 50 mph. My advice is never speed on the Terwilliger curves. I had a nice apartment nestled between Barbur Blvd and I-5 and I would go to sleep each night to the soothing sounds of cops pulling people over.

I drive I-5 in WA all the time. I thought the drivers around here had a reputation for being notoriously slow? When I first moved here, it was an adjustment to slow down because I was used to going much faster. Now when I drive in Utah, I feel like I'm at a stand still compared to the other drivers.

Not me. I think drivers around Seattle are some of the best I've been around.

They actually fixed those last year. And they did it in one summer. I was shocked.

And I would agree that speed isn't the issue in Spokane. I-90 is 60 MPH speed limit for most of Spokane. I was surprised that for the most part, people observed that law. From Liberty Lake through CDA is goes to 70, and again, most observed that also.
