Exactly. He's a thief and a liar. He's asking for sympathy based on a specific reason. If there is basis for questioning whether his reason is legit, it becomes relevant.

            Let's try that hypothetical again.

"I have to fly home tonight. I've got to do some shopping!"

"You were convicted of shoplifting 10 years ago. This is relevant to report."

"But I already paid my debt to society. I still have to do shopping."

"We're still going to report your shoplifting."

              • Of course, it will be my luck that the doctor turns out to still be a sleazeball, and he had to rush back to his practice to write fentanyl prescriptions to his prostitutes. But even if that's the case, I still stand by my point. His past convictions do not add anything significant to the overall story. They were included because they were salacious.

I am mildly surprised this didn't earn an oh brother. It deserves one.

So what do I do here? Do I just re-post what I said too, albeit slightly expanded?

Which part? For ease of discussion, I am happy to lop it off at "I have to get home to play Ghost Recon!" You don't see that as being the slightest bit relevant to the story?

To be clear, in case anyone misunderstands me, I am not suggesting that the doctor deserved to be knocked out and dragged off a plane. I am merely pushing back against the suggestion that his stated reason that he could not leave the plane is irrelevant to the discussion. Certainly at some point that reason has to become relevant (if even as one point among many) - e.g., the Ghost Recon hyperbole.

Is he a licensed physician that had patients to see on Monday morning? Is so, and all indications are that is true, past crimes play zero part in whether an airline should deem his current objection reasonable or not. They had no way of knowing of his past and even if they did, it wouldn't have mattered.

I'm more talking about whether or not it is relevant to report in the news. Of course United couldn't have known whether his reason was valid at the time they were taking him off the flight.

Why in the world would it be relevant? It changes nothing and drags him through the mud. I guess dragging him up the isle wasn't enough.

Because he basically forced the police to drag him kicking and screaming like a baby from the plane. If it turns out his justification for that tantrum was other than he claimed it was, that seems relevant to me.

I'm not absolving United/the police of responsibility. There's plenty of blame to go around. I'm just pushing back against the notion that we shouldn't even look at this guy's supposed justification for acting like a baby.

                                This isn't a good comparison.
