  • My Mom, the school teacher, gave out pencils. The older I get, the more I think she was a genius, rather than clueless about why nobody came trick-or-treating.

Your mom is the anti-Christ. Come on, it's one night a year. Have some good candy and make children happy.

I dunno. She taught 2nd grade for close to 40 years and lived in the same neighborhood as the students she taught. Perhaps she had enough of them seeing them 5 days a week?

She would trade in her Halloween candy for prizes like beanie babies and other stuff. Her brothers soon figured out she was getting a pretty good deal and would offer to trade in their Halloween candy for stuff.
Why didn't you merely exhort the community as a unified whole to practice good parenting to your child instead?

                • Who would ever think this is a good idea?

UPDATE: City Attorney John Rose has advised New Haven police not to move forward with the pilot program.
                  The original plan is below:

Lock your doors or learn your lesson, that’s the message from New Haven police.

Officers in East Rock are starting a pilot program. “Cars will be checked for visible valuables,” said New Haven City Spokesperson Laurence Grotheer. If they see a valuable Grotheer says they’ll take it if you car doors are unlocked. They’ll leave a note and you can pick it up at the police station property room. “I think it might work,” said Audrey who lives in the neighborhood.

                            • Guy doesn't want to miss his child being born but is out of town... Calls in bomb threat to hospital thinking that will delay things so he can make it in time:

Charges: Man made bomb threat to hospital to see child born

A Payson man was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for allegedly making a bomb threat against a hospital in September, and charges in a related case claim he made the threat so he could arrive at the hospital in time to see his child born.

Michael Sherman Morlang, 26, is accused of calling Sevier Valley Medical Center with the threat on the morning of Sept. 17. He is charged in U.S. District Court of Utah with "maliciously convey(ing) false information knowing the same to be false, concerning an attempt being made unlawfully to damage and destroy a building, by … fire and an explosive," court documents say.

U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch said Morlang's threat severely affected Sevier Valley Medical Center.
