Practical and fuel efficient. Nothing wrong with that. I drove a Corolla until 2010 when a bump in salary induced a mid-life crisis.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostDude, I drive a Hyundai.
I’m sure you’d agree though, that a car does not define a person (unless your moniker is Molliere that is).

The interest isn’t the reason I pay monthly. That’s just how it was first setup and I see no reason to change it.

A CRV is feminine.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostWe bought her the car of her choice in 2017 (under 30k), out of guilt no doubt, and she chose the 2018 Honda CRV. We thought she’d go something a little more sporty or feminine but we’re proud to see she chose practical. Now she needs to teach my wife how to drive (my accident was the other driver’s fault).
Just got a quote from MetLife. They put the annual premium at $4,089. That basically half of what Liberty Mutual wants. Now I feel a bit better. It’ll only be a $40 increase over what we are paying now...which probably means I’ve been overpaying for years.

We are $4000 a year on Geico with 3 cars. 100/300 on all 3 cars. $500 deductible.
TK2 has been paying her portion of the car insurance for a year now. Her portion of that $4,000 is $2,400 if you can imagine that.
The wife and I both have 2017 vehicles, and we are about $750 every six months for the both of us. Insurance is outrageous.

BYU math dept chair responds to the recent viral poster issue on FB. Michael is a personal friend of mine and a great guy. I think he got overly defensive on a personal level, but I can't blame him. I can't imagine the crap he has had to deal with over this dumb poster.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostNo good deed goes unpunished.
From what I hear, this poster was made by a student and the dept immediately pulled it down and redesigned it when it showed up. They do this lecture regularly and they rotate the assigned faculty. But I guess internet outrage is fun.
This is CONTROVERSIAL. Some people will not like what I am about to write. But it is an important message.
The BYU Math Dept has a Women in Math club that is run by female math majors and is advised by two female math faculty. I support this club. It would be great if more math departments had a Women in Math club. The club has been in existence for several years and meets regularly. For this week's event, the club wanted to learn about different areas of math research, and they chose and invited four faculty members, all of whom are male, to speak to the club about math research. To advertise the event, a club member created a poster announcing the event and posted it. Some of you may have seen the now infamous BYU Women in Math club poster with the image of four male faculty members at the top. As department chair of the BYU Math Dept, let me dispel some misconceptions about the event.
(1) The four male faculty members were not presenting a panel discussion on women in math. Anyone saying this is misinformed. The four male faculty members had been invited by the female students to talk about their research. The club members wanted to learn more about different topics available for them to do undergraduate research. Last year we had 101 math undergraduates (both male and female) be mentored by BYU math faculty in original and unsolved math research problems. It would be great if more math departments offered their undergraduate math majors opportunities to be mentored in original math research.
(2) It is true that it would have been good to have some female math faculty speak on their research. The female faculty members in the department have already done that several times. It would be great if all math departments provided opportunities for their female faculty to discuss their research with their math majors.
(3) It is true that it would have been good to have outside female mathematicians speak. We do this regularly. During the current academic year (since September 2017) we have had the following female mathematicians speak in the math dept at BYU: (a) Danielle Hanks (Google), (b) Pam Harris (Williams College), (c) Sara Smoot (LinkedIn), (d) Gigi Doty (Rincon Research), and (e) Gwen Spencer (Smith College). We have at least one more female mathematician speaking this semester, and hopefully more. It would be great if all math departments had a significant number of female mathematicians speak to their math students.
Now, the BYU Math Dept is far from perfect, and with respect to this issue there are two areas we could improve on. First, the optics for the poster were not good. It would have been good if the club had asked the Math Dept for input on the poster before they hung it up. It would have saved us a lot of headaches. But that is our fault for not getting that message across. Second, and more importantly, we only have two tenure/tenure-track female math faculty members and one visiting female faculty member in our department. Several people have attacked me for being chair of a math department with so few female faculty. People who know me, know that I have promoted and supported women in math for many years. For example, in 2007 I founded and starting directing the CURM program at BYU. CURM provides training, support, and funds for mathematics faculty members and their students so they can do research together at their own college or university. CURM has helped over 400 undergraduate students (50% female and 29% from underrepresented minority groups) do original research in mathematics being mentored by over 100 math faculty members (49% female and 20% from underrepresented minority groups). In 2015 CURM received an AMS " Mathematics Programs that Make a Difference" award for its successes in encouraging more female students and students from underrepresented groups to continue in mathematics. I have worked to encourage, support, and advance female mathematicians and mathematicians from underrepresented groups.
There will be people who will find fault in what I have written and will continue to attack me. I admit I am not perfect. During my two years as department chair, I have tried to hire additional female math faculty but I have been unsuccessful. Two years is not a long time, and change takes time. It does not happen over night. Let's work together to support and encourage women in mathematics and move beyond the attacks against me, the BYU Women in Math club, and the BYU Math Dept because of this Women in Math poster.
Feel free to share this message with others.
