I want to buy a long gun

It's starting to warm up (atleast it was before yesterday). I haven't purchased a gun since July. I have the itch again.

I am debating picking up either some sort of tactical shotgun (Remington or Mossberg) or a rifle. If I were to go rifle, it would probably be a Sig 556, though I have considered getting something in 7.62 mm like an M1A1 or an AK.

Any thoughts or advice on a long gun purchase? All I have are to pistols, so I want to expand my collection. Open to any input. I am not a hunter. This would be for sport/target practice shooting and preparation for the impending zombie apocalypse.

colly, did you end up buying a tac/hd shotgun? i've been looking. the problem is, i want something i can keep a pistol grip on most of the time (and it would be nice if it had a rail system), but if i want to take it duck hunting i want it to be functional enough there (with the stock swapped, obviously). any ideas?

I am not sure what good a mossberg would be other than killing zombies and other home defense uses. I can't see it being a good gun for killing clay birds with.

I am looking to get another shotgun myself. I am thinking the Bereatta Xtrema 2. There is a new cabela's around the corner from me having a grand opening sale. I should go.

There is much to be considered.

There are many fine choices out there and you mentioned a few already.

Assuming that ultimately you are looking for some type of zombie combat rifle... The basic question comes down to accuracy versus reliability, and then cost and availability of ammunition and parts. (magazines etc.)

AR's are accurate and have decent reliability at a price point around 1000 bucks and replacement/ upgrade parts are plentiful as is ammunition at reasonable costs.

AK's are less accurate but far more reliable. There is less craftsmanship in the weapon, but the looser tolerances make for incredible reliability and resiliency. The initial costs are cheaper and the ammunition (right now) is plentiful and reasonable. There are replacement parts available... even though you probably won't need them.

The new 5.56 gas piston designs are modern and worth looking at even though they are at the higher price point. The SCAR, XCR and ACR are all solid choices. I absolutely love my Robinson Arms XCR. Made right here in Utah and able to hold it's own (and then some) against the worlds best manufacturers. Alex took the best of the FAL-AR-AK and put them into one rifle (and added his own ideas that he got from listening to people that know what they are talking about).

If you plan to buy one rifle to start a collection with... and the idea is to make it zombie capable out of the box.

It's really hard to argue with the AK-47. It is very capable from 150 meters and in. It hits like a truck in CQB, almost never hiccups right out of the box, is priced at the entry point, and has plenty of available parts and ammunition (might want to stock up).

if you're interested in swapping stocks then I'd just get a remington 870 pump. They're reliable, and they have tons of aftermarket stocks and barrels you can get and easily swap out.

I did end up purchasing a Remington 870 express tactical. I got it at the Crossroads of the West gunshow last spring. I have only shot it once. Put a side saddle on it as well. Pimp terminator shit. I am going to go shoot it again in a couple weeks.



As far as a rifle goes, I'm leaning towards the Springfield M1A scout squad or SOCOM 2 right now. Reading up on 5.56mm vs. 7.62mm, I feel like it would be better to pack the more powerful punch. These guns run about $1600-$1800, so I'm not just going to purchase one at the drop of a hat.

I kinda feel like I need to buy a pick up truck before I get a high-powered rifle. I live in Sandy, and got to an indoor range to fire my pistols. When I go shot gun shooting, I go west of utah lake right there by the roadside. Need go further off the road and up into the hills away from stuff to start blasting away with rifles at longer distances.

I shot clays with the Remington 870 tactical and it performed fine. After the clays I broke out the slugs and 00 buckshot. That's when my shoulder started hurting.

I won't ever hunt with this, but I like it because I can use it for home defense and also playing around with clays.

I am building guns in all the fun calibers. .308, .556/.223, and 7.62x39.

They are mostly complete except the Fal and my AR pistol. I enjoy building them rather than buying them complete.



I also have a few mausers and mosin nagants as well as my .22 plinkers. It is a disease.
