This reminds me of a meeting I was at once where Apple was one of the parties present. The guy from Apple (he was a product design guy, as I recall) rolls in and, like the rest of us, starts to set up his laptop and phone gear. Unlike the rest of us, however, he had this zippered case about the size of large hard back novel, which he unzips and pops open. Inside was a huge assortment of adapters, cable extensions, transformers, dongles, etc. It was amazing. He pulled a couple out and proceed to set up his various devices. I thought it was amusing and sort of looked ridiculous. I guess to a guy like that the idea of needing a dongle or two is no big deal. To most people, however, it increases the hassle by a substantial degree.

Come on. Now you are immediately contradicting yourself. At a minimum, one port guarantees that you need a dongle to charge and listen simultaneously.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostDongles will dry up and go away. How often do you charge your phone while listening to music? I can't think of anytime that I do that. I charge my phone overnight while I'm sleeping. The only time I use both jacks is on long car trips when I'm charging my phone (for no good reason) and have it also plugged into the aux in MJs car to listen to music...but lately I don't even do that since my kids are getting old enough that they just want to listen to their own music on their own devices.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostCome on. 1. In my office, I use my cell phone for almost all work calls and listen to music all the time. I keep the phone charging and keep the headphones in at the same time.
2. Backpacking/hiking I have an auxiliary battery that I use to keep my phone charged and I run the cable from the pack to a pocket with my phone. This way the phone is ready to be used as a camera or as a phone. I also like to listen to music while I hike and so use headphones while the phone is charging.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

You forget that the lightning spec supports daisy chaining (which doesn't require stoopid hubs like USB).Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostCome on. Now you are immediately contradicting yourself. At a minimum, one port guarantees that you need a dongle to charge and listen simultaneously.

Chargers (at some point, if not at introduction) will have two lightning ports to support daisy chaining. Then your lightning headphones can be plugged into the daisy chain port of the charger."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

No one was using a USB hub for music.
If the plug is designed so that the female port is on the back side of the male insert, it might not be too cumbersome. But the products you linked in this thread don't show that; they are of the dongle type, which is a step backwards.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Yes, I get it. BUt the fact that you post that image instead of the nifty product you keep telling me will solve the problem sort of proves that the nifty product doesnt exist. Instead, Apple is going to tell me to use a dongle. ANd maybe I should start carrying my adapter bag so I can have everything I need at all times.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostMaybe this picture will help...

I don't want to stem the bash Apple tide going on here, but it's interesting that other phones have done away with the audio jack.

Android phone manufacturers Lenovo (the Moto Z and Moto Z Force), and LeEco have already made the move. Liang Jun, LeEco’s president of research and development explained that the company believes its digital USB-C connection provides superior audio reproduction.

Don't be surprised if a second (female) port (where your lightning headphones can plug into) comes integrated into the power cord at some time (sooner rather than later). Of course, you still have to carry a power cord or were you assuming that would magically carry itself?Originally posted by creekster View PostYes, I get it. lol. Yes, a bulky and more complicated power cord is the answer! "Don't be surprised" but also don't be surprised that Apple didn't foresee the issue in the first place and build that into the power cord at release. If you are in a less bulky mood you could always opt for the power cord that doesn't have the daisy chain port. Of course, it may not save you much in the way of bulkiness.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Postlol. Yes, a bulky and more complicated power cord is the answer!
