It is due to a lot of hardware to make it fast and secure.... Infrared camera, flood illuminator (for viewing your face in the dark), dot projector,... and that freak'n neutral net hardware in the Bionic A11 CPU!

Touch ID can be spoofed. I am sure Face ID can be spoofed as well but it will take a lot more than just holding up a photo or even a life-like mask.

Nice round numbers. Someone probably just made them up.

I was ready to order a new phone today, pretty awful announcement imo.

              • I like what I see. I'm going to at least get the 8, and maybe even the X. I think the new watch would be cool, but not enough to pay an extra 10 a month to be able to use it as a standalone phone. I'll keep my version 1 for now.

                Baaaaaaa!

You should go with the X and the Apple Watch Series 3 (starting at only $329). Of course, you could get the Series 3 without the cell modem and save $70 if you don't want to spend the $10/mo to share your phone's data plan.

(And you could give your old Series 1 watch to JL for xmas!)

                  • So if I get the X does it mean that my apps that use the fingerprint scanner for security would no longer work with the facial scanner? At least until they are upgraded?
                    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                    • Wait, does the 8 still have the fingerprint scanner? If not, I'll just keep my 7.

Your very unique facial data is stored in what is called the secure enclave (and not on the app CPU). This is the same with phones that have touch ID. The secure enclave will basically authenticate you and tell the OS/App, "Yeah, that is dude that owns this phone." Therefore, your apps that use Touch ID should continue to work with Face ID.

What will be different is legacy apps will not use all the screen until they have been upgraded for the iPhone X.

Yeah, the iPhone 8 has Touch ID ("1 in 50,000" chance of being spoofed by someone else).

The iPhone X has Face ID ("1 in 1,000,000" chance of being spoofed by someone else. "1 in a billion" in JL's case.)

Oh I didn't realize the watch had a no phone option. Even still, I'm probably not going to upgrade that. Not unless JL is super nice to me.

Yeah, about the only reason I would upgrade from my series 1 is for the water proof feature but I doubt the cell phone feature works that well at the bottom of the pool.

I guess we will see how bad JL wants an Apple Watch...
