I've gone through some physically painful scenarios in my life. Most of it has been self-induced. I have hit the wall hard in marathons. I have several scars from bike crashes. When I played basketball I suffered cracked ribs and nearly bit my tongue in two. I've torn ligaments and broken ankles. As I've gotten older, my back and neck ache more frequently. But right now, I am battling an abscessed tooth and my pain medication is starting to wear off. I think it is as painful as anything in recent memory. I will be able to take another pain pill in 30 minutes, but right now, this ain't fun. What's your most painful experience?

Wow. Just thinking about all of your most painful experiences is almost as painful as my most painful experience, which was delivering my first son, no epidural (because it did not work!), and pushing out a baby that had the hugest head ever and weighed over 10 pounds. I'd rather do that over than have any of your experiences. At least I was sort of prepared for my pain.Comment

Niku and Soccermom - my wife has delivered 6 children, 3 in the 9 lb range with large heads. She has also run two marathons. She says that in many respects the experiences are similar. Endurance tests, cresting of pain, relief in finishing and a sense of pride afterwards. Mine has to be when I broke both bones in my arm when I was 15. It looked like I had two elbows <shudder>. I had surgery to put plates in, and waking up that night was absolutely horrible. The nurses were giving me morphine, but I swear it didn't help that much. I was in so much pain. Unfortunately I can't remember being in recovery where apparently I was awake, not in a lot of pain, and pretty loopy. The surgery to take the plates out a year later wasn't a ton of fun either.Not that, sickos.Comment

Well... If you look anything like your avatar, I don't doubt you are in pain!
The hardest and most painful thing I have ever done in my life was mountain bike the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands. Seriously. Within 20 minutes of beginning the trip, I wiped out on my bike and landed pretty hard on my arse... The fall and scrapes were painful, but getting up the next day to resume the trip was awful.
Birthing Charlotte was cake compared to the WWT... Now, ask me that in about 4 more weeks and we will see if I will still make this claim.Comment

Did you crash coming down from the Visitor's Center? You can generate some serious speed going down Shafer Trail. I've done WWT a couple of times and we had a friend wipe out on Shafer Trail. Worst suffering was going through withdrawals after taking percoset post-op. Yes I followed the directions on the prescription. Worst night of my life.Comment

It is definitely something I will do again. I imagine it will be a completely different experience sans pain, but I still had fun and it is such a beautiful ride. When we went, Shafer was on the last day of the ride. We started down the highway from the VC and camped along the Green somewhere that evening. We had just barely turned off the highway onto the dirt road and I hit a patch of sand going pretty fast.
