Ugh. My father nearly died from pancreatitis stemming from a gall-bladder infection about 5 years ago. It hospitalized him, and he ended up intubated and in a drug-induced coma for 3 months, during which time he developed ARDS. At one point we were told by the treating internist that he was all but gone, as he had never seen a survivor of such a severe case of ARDS.

Somewhat miraculously, he made a full recovery over the next 3 months, and returned to the hospital to have his gall bladder out about a month after he went home.

All of this stemmed from my father's refusal to go to the doctor when experiencing regular and repeated gall bladder pain.

I'm going in two hours. I don't want this to go on anymore.

camelish, well, the doctors won't operate either because my symptoms were coming and going. I had a second opinion from a different surgeon in Columbia even. Apparently, in cases like mine, often they do the surgery and the pain doesn't go away. However, my symptoms have changed now, and I'm going to be Insistent Mac.

Insistent Mac gets what he wants. That's not always a good thing.

My ejection fraction was 50%, so it's not my gallbladder.

I'm going for a CT with contrast tomorrow. My bile duct is dilated all the way, so there's a high possibility that there is something lodged therein, possibly a stone.

Other theories include kidney stones that are stuck in the kidneys and cancer.

As my pain is sometimes related to when and what I eat, and the anti-spasmodic drug seems to help the pain, then cancer is the least likely possibility.

I'm frustrated and scared and pissed at the world right now. I need a Dr. House.

pain with CCK=still your gallbladder, esp with a dilated duct. Get a new surgeon.

He said that if he can't tell what's wrong after the CT that he's going to send me to a gastroenterologist. Also, he gave me an Rx for Lorcet 10/650. Isn't that the same thing as Vicodin with a touch higher dose?

                Pretty much the same thing.

I told him the vicodin wasn't really doing anything and that I needed something stronger because I was taking 3 vicodin at a time. I guess I'll wait and see if these work better.

Basically the same-higher narcotic dose but the 650 means it also has a higher acetominophen (Tylenol) dose as well. Typically drug companies will increase the narcotic without increasing the Tylenol to avoid potential acetominophen toxicity. Increasing both doesn't allow you to take any more pain medication in a 24 hour period.

My creatinine levels were good, so I was able to have the IV contrast. My kidneys are working properly.

Waiting the weekend for results SUCKS.

My CT showed no issues anywhere in my abdomen or chest. I'm going to have to go to a specialist.

How can I have so much pain and there be nothing wrong?

Don't get me wrong, I'm elated that I don't have any visible cancers, but my level of frustration knows few bounds right now.

Pain was so bad tonight that I cancelled class and went to the ER. All my blood work was normal, so they refused to keep me and sent me home.

My friend, who is a pathology resident, agrees with JIC, that acalculous cholecystitis sounds like a logical diagnosis given all the data.
