  • Netflix to be available on PS3

Well it is about time. I was pissed when I heard that Netflix would stream content to the XBox, but not the PS3. I was worried that it was an exclusive. Not so.

Read all about it. Netflix will stream for free to the PS3. Niiice.

That is awesome. a couple of years after the xbox.

Perhaps PS3 owners can take hope.......maybe this means legitimate online gaming is on its way, too.

Good for PS3. This has been a great feature for xbox owners. This makes CMBF's decision look better every day.

Great now there are 2 videogame systems that I will never own that you can stream Netflix movies too.

You could just buy a Rocku or a Samsung Blu-ray player. Then you could stream netflix and not have to worry about whether you were ever going to beat Final Fantasy 18.

Wohoo!! Do you happen to know when this becomes available?

I logged on to Netflix, and the PS3 is now listed as one of the official streaming devices. There is a button to sign up for a free DVD copy of the software that will make Netflix work on the PS3. When I signed up, all I got was a message that said the DVD would be sent "later this year." I guess that means in the next couple of months, max. I visited the PS3 online store and there is still no Netflix downloadable content (I was hoping a download version of the Netflix software would already be available. Nope).

The value proposition of the PS3 - upgradability, media center capabilities, gaming, resale value, and other features (e.g. Netflix coming soon!) - make it hands-down the most attractive Blu-ray player on the market. No no, you misunderstood. You don't need BOTH the Samsung BD player AND the Roku player. You need either one. The Roku player streams netflix by itself for only $99. The BD player also streams Netflix by itself. If you don't wanto to play video games, but do want Blu-ray, why not just get the Samsung and save $120?

Well, clearly you don't have to (as you point out). But here are a few advantages to buying the PS3 over a standard component-type BD player.

                    1) Media center capability. I have ripped all of my standard-def DVDs and all of my CDs. All of those videos and music tracks, along with all of our pictures, are available and can be accessed and viewed using the PS3. (I use a Linux media server... which you probably won't, but my BIL uses Windows Media Center on his PC running Vista. Setup is trivial. The PS3 sees the Windows Media server on the network and initiates a handshake... back on my BIL's PC, there is a little pop-up to authorize the device. Click on OK. Done.) The kids can nav our entire DVD library from the PS3. You might underestimate this advantage over a standard BD player... but trust me, it's a huge win around here.

                    2) Firmware Updates. Sony releases major firmware updates that include new features every quarter or so. Since I bought my PS3 almost 2 years ago, the BD profile has been upgraded from 1.0 -> 1.1 -> 2.0 all via firmware downloads that are effortlessly done via the PS3 interface. Minor firmware upgrades have added features like playback support for Divx and other codecs, etc.

                    3) Upgradability. If you ever run out of room on your PS3, upgrading the hard drive in the PS3 is trivial. A task even the most techophobe could perform in under an hour.

                    4) PlayStation Network (PSN). Download movie trailers, game demos, rent movies, buy games. All from your PS3 easily. And unlike Xbox360 Live, PSN is free.

                    5) Games. I know, I know. You don't play. When I bought the PS3 I didn't think I would play any either. I was wrong. I don't play a lot of games on the PS3, but I do play a few. The first game I bought was a little $10 game off of PSN called "Monsters" - it is a 2-player "tower defense" kind of game that my kids love to play (and I don't mind playing with them either). Next game. Lego Star Wars for my 7-yr-old son. Next game. Rock Band 2 and then Rock Band Beatles. All great family games to play together.

OK, so if that doesn't convince you, and you absolutely want/must-have a component-type of BD player for your home theater, then please don't buy the Samsung... buy the Oppo instead. You'll thank me later.

                    cheers.
once you get to 4 and 5, you lose me entirely.

Your best arguments should totally avoid game library and online gaming comparisons to the 360. Focus on the home media thingy, which does seem to be a nice feature.

There is a reason PS3 online is free. It totally blows.

I should point out that I personally would rather have a PS3 than a BD player or Roku. But others, who just watch BD and stream movies, will be fine with the Samsung I think.

We own all of the pixeljunk junk. Monsters is loved. Eden is fun and trippy. They also have a slotcar game that we don't have (ok, so not ALL the games), but that is just because I have too many other games I haven't completed, and can't justify getting more.

Little Robin has conquered the new Uncharted 2 game and is currently working through it again on hard difficulty. The game is total eye candy, and a PS3 exclusive. It is amazing. We are looking forward to Modern Warfare later in November.

haha thats exactly how i am. pixeljunk racers is kinda stupid imo. I haven't tried uncharted, though I've heard good things. The only 2 games on my list to play right now are pixeljunk shooters and dj hero.
