By far, the Californian is the MOST convenient of all hotels. Although, it's going to cost you.

I'd stay outside the east gate or to the South at the Marriott or Hilton. If you aren't in the mood to pay double for food, then go out of the park for lunch and dinner.

Some of the least expensive and largest food items are at the bakery on Main Street. It's a good option for breakfast.
I've stayed in that Hilton a few times. Get a room with a balcony and view of the fireworks. That way if you have to take off before the fireworks, the kids still get to see them. The balcony is huge too.

Has anyone been recently? Is the World of Color thing still a mass of humanity or has the newness worn off?

We went in May and didn't even get tix to World of Color because we showed up 45 minutes after they started handing them out. They "sold" out in 30 mins.

We are going to reveal the surprise with a video I'm currently editing. The concept is a "hey, kids, you know how you are about to take me to the airport to fly to my race? Well, the race is in Disneyland and I'm going to play in the parks a bunch and you get to come too so run out to the car now!" bit, all interspersed with sort of goofy and campy clips that my kids will love.

I am going to decline to post the video here because (a) I am a horrible actor, (b) it's still a very rough cut and has many flaws and (c) there is actually a shower sequence (the video is sort of a sequential bit about me going out for a run, coming home, cleaning up, packing, and leaving) and there may or may not be some actual nudity I need to edit out and/or pixelate.

What I need from you guys is suggestions for a good track to play in the background. I have some Disney music but it's not quite giving me the feel I want. One of the songs I'm considering is Vampire Weekend's Holiday, so that could give a sense. Maybe I should also play the "summon MarkGrace" card.

          Any suggestions appreciated.

How did I not think of this one? I think it will make it in, precisely because my kids won't make the connection.

This video is quite the project. I have the rough cut assembled but I'm still dealing with the audio. The camcorder did a sucky job of recording audio (it was windy) so I'm re-recording my voice, background sounds, etc. and seeing if I can dub over rather than reshoot. And then I have all the effects to put in (don't think special effects; think cleaning up noise and transitions). I'm still an amateur at this so it's slow going, and I have to show the movie to the kids in a couple of weeks.

PAC suggested the ESPN Zone, IIRC.

One possibility would be the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney, but I'm open to others, including the solitude of our own crappy motel room.

Heck, we can have it in my hotel room for that matter. I have no clue how crowded the Zone will be, but I'm only a short walk from there.

                          Heh.

So I almost have this video done, and it's been fun to make. I'm just adding a few last minute effects, and then it's time to make the DVD menu and burn it onto DVD. It's a narrative, sorta - I go on a run, come back, get showered and cleaned up, pack, go out to the car, and then tell the kids to come out now too. Decent enough results for what I started with (I had to work around some major technical problems in the original footage).

So I'm thinking of loading it up for the family on our family blog when I notice that, despite taking extreme caution with the showering sequence, a big ol' hunk of butt makes its way onscreen via the mirror in my bathroom. Oops. The rest of the day is going to spent doing a frame-by-frame search and some pixelation.

Any good ideas for older teenagers on a Disneyland/SoCal trip?

We are on our way to Disneyland! We are doing the 4 day park hipper passes and hoping even with larger crowds we can have a fun, relaxing time. Anyone else headed there this week?
