New iPhone user, here. Can any of you iPhone experts help me understand why my battery drained from 98% to 32% overnight when I didn't received a single text, email, or phone call during that time frame? IOW, what is running on my iPhone that will drain the phone so significantly when it is doing nothing, and is there something I can turn off to prevent that?Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

Check your background apps. One of them may be doing something that makes it run often. If you want long battery life just kill them all.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostNew iPhone user, here. Sometimes if you have a weak cell signal the phone will run your battery down quickly. If this is the case you may want to consider getting a 3G microcell."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I'll tell you what it is: its not a blackberry. You can't just leave it sitting there and expect it to not lose battery steadily overnight. Same for most touch screen phones.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostNew iPhone user, here. If I leave my iphone overnight without doing anything to it, it will generally use very little of the battery. If I started the night at 98% I would expect it to be above 90% in the morning, certainly not at 32%.Originally posted by falafel View PostI'll tell you what it is: its not a blackberry. I had this problem at first. The biggest drain for me was havin email pushed to me phone. I instead set it up to check every 15 minutes for new email. I also turn off most other push notifications as I really don't need them. MJ on the other hand has all push notifications on and her phone buzzes/rings every 5 minutes from FB updates or WWFs moves.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostNew iPhone user, here. IIRC, donuthole bought a 3GS and not an iphone 4. Was the 3GS any worse at preserving battery overnight?Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I don't even have email push set up yet, as I just go the phone on Saturday. So that can't be it. But that's good info for when I get around to getting the email set up (hopefully within the next day or two).Originally posted by Moliere View PostI had this problem at first. Maybe worse, but not that much worse.Originally posted by falafel View PostIs your iphone a blackberry?

My 3GS is almost 2 years old, and if it is set at 100% at night, I would expect my batter to be in the 90% range when I wake up.

FWIW, I have push on, and it doesn't hurt me that much. It may matter that I get relatively few pushes, mostly e-mail. I get about 1 facebook notification every year. If you count all my non-email stuff, I get a few push notifications a week, probably less than 10.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI don't even have email push set up yet, as I just go the phone on Saturday. This was helpful, as I had several apps unnecessarily running in the background. I'm guessing that was a huge part of the problem.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostCheck your background apps. It really depends on the apps you have "running" in your background. Some background apps are better behaved that others. I say "running" because background apps do not really run in the background like on a true multitasking operating system on iOS. The apps really only operate as "event handlers" while in the background. However, if you have an app streaming audio off the network in the background, for example, and then turn down the audio then this app could drain your battery pretty quickly.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostThis was helpful, as I had several apps unnecessarily running in the background.
