I have to agree with this, to a point. I think it is difficult for a newcomer to get the hang of what happens here. It is a small enough group with enough inside jokes and stories that it often takes some effort to figure out what the heck people are talking about. Quite often when people ask questions, the answer is "stick around and you'll find out". Not necessarily the most helpful approach. I would bet that the majority of folks who come and stay are also folks who have a relationship with a current member - someone who can kind of help ease them in.

This is useful criticism and worthy of consideration. Thanks.Originally posted by Eddie View PostI have to agree with this, to a point. Surfah, it might be useful for the General Authorities to articulate some kind of vision or guidelines of what they want this place to be under its new name. That might be buried in this thread somewhere, but I don't remember seeing anything very comprehensive or coherent. I remember seeing some stuff about recent past and current trends, but not a lot of what the name-change is intended to spur or spark going forward.Originally posted by Surfah View PostYou're not the first Ute to throw that jab since the name change. I think CB is the last thing anyone here wants this place to be. Frankly, I don't see it and it seems like nothing more than a cheap parting shot. But if you truly do feel that way, I'd appreciate it to know why so the EC could possibly address those things.
Right now, the impression of what this board should be that is trickling down to me is something along the lines of, "we love individual Utes as long as they are avoiding the sin of discussing Utah sports." Just like the "love the sinner, hate the sin" line, there are a lot of ways to take that."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

I'm not very smart so I always confuse barely and barley. For a second I thought you'd carefully found a way to compel landpoke back. That would've been awesome.Originally posted by Levin View PostThe problem with the Board is that it's mindcrushingly boring, which is why the numbers are dwindling. There has been no change in vision or guidelines. There was a name change.Originally posted by Solon View PostSurfah, it might be useful for the General Authorities to articulate some kind of vision or guidelines of what they want this place to be under its new name. I explained in this thread why I chose to support it. There has been no discussion about moderating the board any differently than it has been from the start."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Why would the Executive Committee need to say anything? They changed the name but have not changed any of the forums. They are exactly the same, you can still post about the Utes until your hearts content. In fact just yesterday the Oregon St vs Utah basketball thread had 17 posts!Originally posted by Solon View PostSurfah, it might be useful for the General Authorities to articulate some kind of vision or guidelines of what they want this place to be under its new name. When is the last time you made a sports related post? Looks like you have two posts in sports forums since November of 2012. Only one of them was sports related the other was a smart ass comment. The name change will have no impact on you.
Same with guys like Nikuman who is complaining about not liking the name change yet he said he is not much of a sports fan anymore. If you are not much a sports fan the removal of "ute" in the title should not matter.*Banned*

This isnt fair to Ute fans.
They just had a losing season in football and no bowl game, their basketball team absolutely sucks and has for years, then John Dehlin betrays them, and now this? It's just too much, and I don't like it.
I take back all the ridicule for the massive amounts of PAC 12 paraphernalia Utes fans are clinging to, its about all they have.

I haven't complained about the name-change (in fact, I think it's a good name for a byu-board). I have suggested that people lighten up on The Dude.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostWhy would the Executive Committee need to say anything? I agree that the removal of the word "ute" from the title won't really change this place, but that begs the question of why it was removed. To my mind, it was done with the future in mind. I am interested in what that future might look like.
I actually am a sports fan.
I don't make Utah sports-related posts on here because I consider this to be a de facto byu board. I would welcome a place to discuss Ute sports more openly, but I have a hard time justifying my spending time on one board, let alone two or three.
I have no intention of burning any bridges around here (not that you and I have much of a bridge, but whatever we have I don't consider it to be on fire)."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

I'm pretty new over here. When the site was created, I received lots of invitations to come over here from friends of mine who were some of the regular Ute posters here. I checked it out at the time, and would peek in from time to time, but never even registered. A few months ago, I figured what the heck, signed up, and posted some information from public document requests that I had made. I believed that this was new information that would add to the discussion, and based on what I had been told about this site, it was information that I thought would prompt more discussion and that added something to the community.Originally posted by Levin View PostThe problem with the Board is that it's mindcrushingly boring, which is why the numbers are dwindling. Instead of that, I was mocked and discouraged from posting that kind of information. I don't care about being mocked, it's a rivalry after all, but it was pretty clear what kind of posts and information was welcomed on the site. The name change just reinforces that, and from what I am reading it sounds like that trend has been expressing itself for some time. As a result, I decided to stop posting this kind of information here, since it obviously wasn't welcomed by most, despite the fact that I've obtained some interesting stuff pertaining to scheduling and conference affiliation (note that this is not exclusive to BYU sports, I've asked for lots of stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with BYU, or athletics at all, because it's incredibly easy and a much better way of finding out what's actually going on than relying on inaccurate news stories).
This is the primary reason I've stopped posting this stuff. The fact that BYU's legal department felt that it was worth reaching out to me to strongly encourage me to stop seeking public information didn't affect me one way or the other.

As I said before, I have no problem with the name of the board being changed. It's Jeff's board and if he wants to change it, he should.
I think some folks would have less a problem with the name change had there been some sort of advance notice. It would have had to be a notice asking for approval, but some sort of "hey, we're going to change the name of the board for these reasons and it's going to happen on ...". That way, it wouldn't have been a surprise to anyone.
When it happened, I had been looking through one of the threads, then got up to do something away from my desk. When I came back, there was some sort of error message on the screen that basically said that CUF didn't exist. I refreshed the page and the message came up again, so I decided to check back later because something was wrong with the site. About 30 minutes later or so, I had to log in and it was no longer CUF.
Again, the change was no big deal, but letting folks know in advance may have assuaged a lot of the feelings folks have about it."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

You were mocked because of your infatuation with BYU as a Ute fan. Its an unhealthy and borderline scary obsession. Ha, I think you don't really appreciate how much time it takes. I am 100% certain that last year I spent less than three hours total making document requests, and definitely less than an hour making requests that have anything to do with BYU. It's essentially the same as doing an internet search for something you care about, which I'm pretty sure fans of all rivalries do. I think my family knows I'm alive and around, but thanks for your concern.Originally posted by Tone Loc View PostYou were mocked because of your infatuation with BYU as a Ute fan. I think you really underestimate the entertainment value in getting a rise out of a cerain segment of your fanbase. If I knew it would have elicited a response from the BYU Legal Dept I would have been doing it myself. That's the kind of thing that makes it all worthwhile. Plus, I think Scratch did most of this at work; there was probably little or no effect on his family.Originally posted by Tone Loc View PostYou were mocked because of your infatuation with BYU as a Ute fan.
