  • I don't post often and just linger on the periphery, but it seems sad and strange to change the dynamic that existed here. This seemed like a pretty tight knit group, and blowing it up a strange course of action.

    What went down?

I don't think UD was talking about how people feel about their rivals. He was talking about decent behavior, and not holding on to "cruelty or whatever it is about the dynamic with some of us that brings out the worst" in both sides. From what I know of you, you're also in favor of not holding on to that.

Fate has a funny way of shoving never-evers down our throats.

I look forward to the day when Gidget Jr. is a 2-sport athlete at the U., and Surfah Jr. is captain of the Utes' Chess Team.

Then I will pull a Hot Lunch and root for my kids' success until they graduate. I'll tell you this much, I will never lend a dime to pay for non-resident tuition to the U. Ever.

              I agree.

Here is what went down. You could say that in human history tribalism has been both a blessing and a curse. I see it like the horse and buggy; integral to human progress, to a point, not an end to itself and even atavistic. Actually, though, at its worst tribalism is not as harmless as the horse and buggy. Maybe child farm workers is a better analogy.

But the pernicious thing about tribalism is its continuing identity hook. It's a lot of what keeps religion from expiring and vanishing from the earth in these latter more enlightened times. Indeed, it's the source of the spectator sports high (and lows). Of course with Mormons and especially BYU fans tribalism is bred in the bone. It's one of the ways the LDS Church is a deliberate throw back, with its more Old Testament perspective. In effect Lebowski and his supporters elevated an abstraction over the community. We've seen this happen before. Fortunately, here we Utes managed to got out with our lives intact.

I agree with Indy that some here wanted a more "spiritual board" (there were a couple of moderators who would be happier moderating CB who will remain unnamed). Here is my part: a central part of Christ's message was his message's universality. Christ said, in effect, my role is to bring about an end to tribalism. This is a chief irony of the Mormon type of Christianity and its influences.

Now I'm going to try to curb my urge to help people and stop wasting my pearls of wisdom on this place.

                  SU nails that Jesus quote:

But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
                  Matthew 15:24

In other words, "My role is to bring about an end to tribalism (so long as you belong to one of the tribes of Israel)."

                        • I've never updated my bookmarks, they still go to CougarUteForum.com, do I need to so that before a certain time or will it always work?

I realize the time it took to post this could have been used changing my bookmark.

                          • The transition away from a joint BYU/Utah is almost complete. Now we just have to get rid of the "The latest news related to the Cougars and Utes" in the Wire.

That's just a typo. BYU's independence is now complete. It's now fully in outer darkness.
