If I have offended either of you, I am sorry. I actually first thought of Ozzie and Harriet, but I didn't think you would know who they were.

It's not the best designed site, but it is updated constantly, and for the most part is not filled with the stupid jobs making big promises that you find on Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com. It has all sorts of types of jobs, government and civilian. I highly suggest looking there.
I search that site daily. I've also been checking the equivalent in Idaho and Oregon. The problem as I have stated is that salaries in Utah are paltry. A few years back before I married Gidget I was working here in VA and looking to move back to Utah. I had received two offers after a round of interviews with 3 different companies. The company I liked best was a near 40% cut in pay for the exact same job responsibilities. The other company was 30% cut.

As to the government gigs. My dad has feelers out with his contractors. It seems though that the trend is in-sourcing and creating more government jobs rather than contracting like they used to. My problem is that with these types of jobs I have no veteran status, prior government experience, spouse who is military, no security clearance, etc. I am at the end of the line when it comes to preferential hiring. That and it seems most of the appointments I qualify are temporary posts and I am looking for something permanent, particularly if there is relocation involved. Another downside, is that it is such a lengthy process. I was in the running for two positions a year ago. One in Ogden with the IRS and another in Boise in acquisitions. It was 3 months before I found out that I was one of three and didn't get the jobs.

I am just busting your balls. No offense taken. I don't know who Rock Hudson and Doris Day are either.

My mom took an online course on procurement and gov't contracts. It seemed to catapult her career. She did have some previous experience, which helped, but she has a good career ahead of her.

            LOL

I prefer to not have my balls busted. They are the only semblance of manhood I have left.

If you think you would be interested in being an R.N. then I would encourage you to pursue it. There is a demand for nurses everywhere, you can practically choose your hours once you get some seniority (6 months) and the pay is decent.

Can you request a male nurse not shave you or is it just luck of the draw.

By the way, I also think it would be a pretty good career for someone, male or female. The stigma is gone. I still don't want a male nurse one shaving me though.

Nursing's a great career. My wife is a nurse in Vegas and she's making what I would consider very good money. She only works 1 day a week, but could easily work 5 (12 hour shifts). If you do that, the last 2 shifts are time and a half, so the money starts to grow pretty quick. And like others have mentioned, there are jobs everywhere.

I am meeting with a counselor tomorrow at the local JC where they have an RN program. I have a buddy doing it who is getting out of the mortgage business. He goes to classes in the evenings and does clinicals on the weekends while still working full time. He's mid 30's, in the bishopric of his ward, and has 3 little girls at home. If he can do this, I can.

I'll see what it's about. I have been thinking of doing this very same thing. Then once I am licensed, work full time while trying to earn a BSN and then maybe Nurse Anesthetist or Practioner school.

I think that's a great plan Surfah. I know quite a few nurses, male and female and they really like the flexibility it allows them while still offering good pay. My sister-in-law is and RN and for both of her kids she basically worked an extra shift or so a week and was able to take off six months instead of the standard six weeks without seeing a pay cut those years. If I were to consider a career change, I'd consider nursing as a strong option.

for a neophyte....what is "good pay" for nurses? What are we talking here?

$25-$40 hourly plus benefits. At least in So. Utah.

My BiL just finished up this sort of plan. He worked his way through his BSN and then got his masters so he could work as a CNP. He's been working as a practitioner for a year now and has a very nice salary.

My wife is currently making $46 an hour at a union hospital, although she's not a union member. I understand that Californian nurses can make more than that.

She only made $18 an hour her first year out of nursing school in Utah.
