  • My turn

I'm bored and my eyes are glossing over from combing job boards.

    How did you find CUF?

Chasing the rabbit through the hole of ESPN, CougarBlue, CougarBoard, CougarGuard, and CUF.

How did you choose your moniker?

Once upon a time I surfed. It was also a handle I used for a yahoo email account that I used to handle spam when needing an account to register with. Of course surfah was taken so I added 33 to it because 3 is my favorite number. I wore 3, 33, and 73 playing sports in HS. I grew tired of the 33 and people sending me PM's if that was my age. So I asked MikeWaters to drop it for me a few months after registering at CG. It's still surfah33 on CB, but my last post there was about 2 years ago I think.

What do you do (other than read CUF)?

I used to manage engineering projects in the field of EMI/RFI mitigation. In the last year the projects included Goldman Sachs Tower in Manhattan, Bank of America Tower in Times Square, Stimson Remick Hall of Notre Dame, Nanotechnology Laboratory at University of Florida, Otorhinolaringology Laboratory at University of Pennsylvania, Fisher Translational Center at University of Pennsylvania, East River Science Park in Manhattan, Royal Bank of Scotland in Stamford, CT. I was pretty busy until the economy worsened and the contracts stopped coming in and was laid off. Now I just mope around the house crying woe is me driving Gidget nuts.

I like board sports. I like to golf.

Did you ever consider an alternative career path?

I wanted to be a doctor once upon a time. Also a teacher. Given my current unemployment I am considering another one and have been looking at going back to school, maybe nursing, teaching, engineering, etc.

How many time zones have you lived in and what is your current time zone?

I keep moving East. Born in Hawaii. Grew up in Pacific. Went to college in Mountain. Served a Mission in Mountain/Central. Now live in the East. Want to get back west.

    What are your sports loyalties?

Everything Cougars. Been a fan long before I went to school there. Also have an affinity for the LA teams having spent most of my youth there. I am a bigger Lakers fan than anything else. I did an internship in college and cried in my hotel room after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Spurs. The A's are my favorite AL team. The Dodgers are my favorite NL team. I love the Raiders. Hockey. Meh. I claim the Kings, though the Capitols have grown on me since being here.

What's your standing in the church?

I am more mullah-ish than I like to admit. The Church works for me. It makes me happy. I admittedly don't think that hard about it anymore. I can compartmentalize most anything and "I don't know" suffices with my faith.

Are you looking forward to Wuap's welcome question and what do you think it will be?

Not really. I'll have to read it 5 times to understand it and then waste 20 minutes Googling to sound half way witty and intelligent in my response. I'd rather he just read this and say we shall be great friends.

Do you expect anyone to respond to this thread?

Nope. I am a threadkiller by trade. If there is any response, it'll probably be my own bumping this with a "see I told you" in regards to this very question and pathetic answer.

I'll respond by saying I wore the number 13 at every level of every sport I ever played.

Good luck with the career choices(esp if you are going to change). If you have the sciences already done, nursing should be an easy entry. There is an ongoing shortage of good RN's in the southwest part of Utah, and likely many other areas as well.

If 13 is unlucky, then 12 and 14 are guilty by association.

If you are looking to get into teaching there are many states that will hire those that don't have a teaching degree and then help them get it in a couple of years. If you can move on up into an administrative position, the money isn't too bad, either.

              Why not?

I don't know what to do. I am afraid that whatever I do next will be just another blip on the resume because I need an income and not necessarily what I want to do. But I don't know what I want to do either. I took one of those career assessment exams, you know the bullshit one that they talk about in Office Space? Anyway, I got the results and the number one job for me was airline attendant. WTF? I wasted an hour taking this damn survey to tell me I was supposed to serve beverages at 35,000'.

As to the teaching thing, it was always something I thought about doing when I didn't have to depend on a teacher's income. I'd love to do it if it didn't mean real lean times or living in South Central, no offense Robin.

I have been looking at UVA as they offer a certificate in procurement and contracts. There seems to be plenty of government jobs in that area. I don't know. I do know that I'd love to live in Utah again, but salaries there are poor.

Now might be the time to get a government job. Have you been able to find job openings within the government?

Looking. I have been combing openings on USAjobs.gov, fbi.gov, Marine Systems Command in Quantico, etc.

If you are wanting to move out to Utah, jobs.utah.gov is a good resource. It's not the best designed site, but it is updated constantly, and for the most part is not filled with the stupid jobs making big promises that you find on Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com. It has all sorts of types of jobs, government and civilian. I highly suggest looking there.

Ever see the movie Pillow Talk. You and Gidget remind me of the movie version of Rock Hudson and Doris Day.

No doubt. I think my emasculation by Gidget here has been well established. Thanks!
