Well, at least you have a good relationship with your dad.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Viking, an honest question that pertains somewhat to the undercurrent in this thread (and probably should be asked in a PM, you can answer in a PM): how long did it take you to 'get over' the church?

It is a very difficult transition to go from believing, life-long, uber-TBM member who was a Superhuman Missionary, to a person who just can't buy what the church is selling and who is uncertain about his belief in God? That transition away from the church has to be at least as painful as a divorce, but perhaps even more personal and certainly far longer lived than the breakup of a marriage. I can't even begin to understand how difficult it would be to 'tell the family' (especially TBM parents, siblings, or worse, elderly grandparents).

For most of us here, the church has been an intimate part of our lives for longer than we can remember. If we come to the decision that certain claims don't seem to be true, or that some things don't seem to add up or were exaggerated while other notable events were swept under the rug, or that the church leadership really doesn't seem to be in contact with the Divine, it can be heart-rending painful.

When I was a TBM I viewed most any little criticism of my view of the church as 'hateful anti-mormon speech', rather than evaluating the argument on its merits or checking facts at the primary source. It is true that there is a fair amount of hateful speech out there, but on some points of criticism the truth actually lies somewhere in between the church's claims and the claims of its critics.

People who have left the church and feel betrayed to some extent can act overly emotional and 'hateful' in their frustration. But so can those who remain faithful can lash out in equally hateful ways when they feel personally attacked by anybody who discusses some of the more troubling issues of church history.

In short, those who believe in Jesus (whether in the church or out of it) should treat people with compassion and Christ-like love. Those who don't believe in Jesus should treat people with an equivalent level of compassion and human kindness.

My grandfather's mother was sephardic and my grandmother's father was askenazi.

I doubt I've gotten over the church but i won't persecute it or its believing members as some do here.

I knew there was link somewhere. I think it is cool that you have both sephardic and askenazi lineage.

"Getting over" the church is probably not possible. 'Moving beyond' is probably a better term to use, and that is the step that needs to happen before one can stop persecuting believing members.

                    Thanks for the response.

Viking you make no sense. The defintion of atheist is not believing in God. So how can atheistcougar hate God if he doesn't believe in him to begin with? How d you hate something you don't think exists? Same with your brother. A true ATHEIST would be completely indifferent about God because they don't believe he exists.

Amazing that toolbag AC can't even get atheism right.
