I'm starting this thread in hopes that we, the general common stock holding membership of this board, can receive an official position regarding the perpetual banning of the Moose's Whistle and all of his subsequent accounts. I recognize that creekster will probably respond with a quick "what makes you think you're entitled to an official position," but I'm going to ask anyway.
I'm also asking because Babs has noted that administrating a board like this is not exactly an easy thing, and I don't want to suggest that the EC (if they in fact have formed an agreement on the matter) have acted summarily or presumptuously. Also, if there is in fact more to their decision than can be seen by a plain language reading of the board, I'd be interested in knowing what more there is.
The Mooses' Whistle had perhaps as bad an entry to this board as anyone. One of his very first motions was to change the board's format, a request that went over like a lead balloon. Creekster suggested that Moose make like a tree and get outta here, which lead to this statement by Moose:
That post inspired the soon-to-be-called-as-bishop John McClain to offer this welcoming statement:
Within one week, Moose was gone. Supporting documentation shows that his main offense was "universal hatred" on other boards. However, the mods (or one mod) said that the ban could be reconsidered if there was a big backlash (just another example of mods acting unilaterally
).
Moose then began a foolish dupe campaign where he signed up for up to 10 new accounts all based on his first username (The Moose's Whistle 7, 8, 9, 10, etc.). The he tried "BSU Bronco and Utah Ute Fan," but mucked it up by admitting that he only signed up to troll Portland Ute. A series of poorly chosen dupe accounts followed, each banned as soon as they were investigated. I'm assuming that part of the ban included checking IP addresses.
A few months later, Moose returned, this time apparently with hat in hand.
Again, he was summarily banned.
Since then, there have been several, albeit much less infrequent, Moose appearances. The have all been banned on sight. This is a place that Moose apparently continues to visit although it is obvious that he's not allowed to participate. I think that show's his sincere interest in the board. It also shows that his lurking presence isn't based on a love of trolling, since he can't troll without an account.
I also think that Moose should be given a second chance. I know some of you will say that he's been give 10 chances, but really he hasn't since he's always been banned as soon as he's discovered. I don't think he's really ever been given more than one chance. His first appearance here was less than ideal, but I think a lot of that has to do with his coming over from Utefans and CB. If we were all judged by our conduct/personas on those boards, even LA Ute would be banned on CUF. But I don't think that Moose fully understood the concept of the board or the community of posters on the board. He has said as much, in fact (see above). We've traditionally given other posters a reasonable time to figure the board out before giving them a perma-ban. Take our beloved Viking, who had a similarly rocky start on CUF but has since transformed himself into a valuable contributor, IMO (and at least he's not provoking showdowns in local eateries anymore.) I think, and I've said before, that Moose deserves a true second chance. 30 days, or maybe even just 2 weeks. If he can't behave, he's gone and the matter can be completely settled.
Having said all of this, I will take Babs's at her word and recognize that there could be issues outside of the public board of which I am not aware. I don't want to substitute my judgment for that of the EC, but I would appreciate hearing what those issues are. If they involve sensitive matters that shouldn't be discussed in the open, that's fine, but I'd at least like to know if that's the case (creekster, I know I'm not entitled to know).
