  • Women never say the prayers in General Conference?

Someone mentioned to me yesterday that women are never given the opportunity to pray in General Conference. I wasn't sure if that's true, so last night I fast-forwarded thru the video streams of last October's GC to see who gave the prayers and they were in fact all men:
    Saturday AM:
    John M. Madsen
    Clate W. Mask

    Saturday PM:
    Carlos H. Amado
    Robert S. Wood

    Sunday AM:
    Glenn L. Pace
    Enrique R. Falabella

    Sunday PM:
    Marlin K. Jensen
    W. Douglas Shumway

Can someone here recall a woman ever praying in a session of GC? If true that they're not allowed to pray, that's pretty sad.

Yawn. BTW, if they did let women pray in GC, then the complaint would morph into something along the lines of "apparently they only think enough of women to let them pray rather than give more than the couple of token talks they get."

These really should all be compiled into one "scottie's problems with the LDS church" thread, for easier viewing.

A sister said the closing prayer at the 1st Presidency Christmas Devotional on Sunday, not that I think that matter one way or another. I just appreciated it was a prayer not a 2.5 minute talk like some GC prayers can be.

I am not sure of the claim's merits, but why do you always dismiss these things so out of hand?

Even for sake of discussion, if it were true then it is a valid question that could lead to some interesting discussion.

This seems like something that is right up your alley, however your responses seem overly defensive. This is something that is actually right up your alley...stats. It would seem to be a very simple thing to disprove Scottie's premise by providing an example of a woman praying in GC.

Personally, I am not on board with the premise. I seem to recall women praying in GC. Admittedly, I can't name specific instances, but I am pretty sure they have done such.

Excellent prayer to end the devotional, unlike the invocation which got it off to a really rough start. Whew!

Mostly, I think this topic is uninteresting, but my comment was meant to highlight scottie's grapevinian propensity to delve into any and all minutiae to nitpick with what the church does or doesn't do and if women suddenly started praying in GC scottie would proceed to use that fact against the church to open up a new avenue for his gainsaying.

Note that I'm not saying it's true, I'm asking if anyone here can recall a woman doing so (Christmas Devotional isn't GC) because it's not easy to look up.

Kiss my ass, you don't know me. Like I said, I don't know if it's true, I'm asking.

I don't know you, but I see what you've posted over a long period of time.

Well, you weren't just asking, you were editorializing.

Maybe it is just me, but in my opinion, the following response is much more likely to kill the discussion (if that is, indeed your intent):

"Scottie....I checked. Yes, women have prayed in GC, as recently as X or Y or Z. Thanks!"

Your efforts remind me of Sisyphus....fruitless to the point of self-defeating. In your attempt to point out the redundancy, you actually generate more discussion on the very topic you wish to avoid.

PS What do you think of the BYU Cougars against OSU? I like their chances!

Another question: If a woman has never prayed at GC, does that automatically mean that women are not ALLOWED to pray at GC?

Furthermore, you weren't asking, you merely used the guise of a question to bitch about something you were already damn sure about going in.
