For their daughters the will display their achievements and items relating to their daughter's projects.

Not surprised about the smaller and cheaper quality as well. The church has its priorities in fulfilling the mission of the church and things are not getting any less expensive. The church doesn't spend a dime on the eagle award (at least in Texas). Ross Perot has been paying for those for some time.
Actually in our ward here in Orem its a pretty big deal. We do a slide show set to music, displays, refreshments, etc.

I don't think this quote can be emphasized enough...

While we often focus on the top-down nature of hierarchical LDS church structure, there is a significant and long-standing heritage of efforts bubbling up from the bottom. Those rippling waves can bring change that benefits the whole body of the church.
When people sit around waiting for the prophet to receive revelation on a topic, they typically wait in vain. I'm not advocating that women should start ordaining each other, but grassroots movements like the Pants one are what the church needs. It's nice to see the effects of the efforts of a few women.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
