I didn't mean to rip on Ms. Enos; it's just that her character is so utterly unlikable. The other female lead, btw, is Olivia Williams who is a fine actress (An Education, The Sixth Sense, etc.), but she likes to go slumming, as in The Postman and now Sabotage.Originally posted by creekster View PostYou are a tough crowd. She is also the lead in a TV series called The Killing that I sort of like. I'd say more, but I don't want to ruin my rapport with Space Ghost in this thread.

FIFY. [Hat tip: creekster]Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostThis doesn't even merit a post, but I'll proceed nonetheless. With the missus off to last evening's meeting, I was bored so I took in a viewing of our ex-Governor's new action film, Sabotage. Dreck. A fair amount of action, plenty violent, but rather lifeless and depressing, with nary a redeeming feature. One of the two female leads is supposed to be hot, at least early on, but she looks like a 50-year-old Jessica Chastain on the skids. I was intrigued by her utterly depressing character, and read this about her on IMDB: "Mireille Enos was born to an American father and French mother who met while her father was serving on a Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." She attended BYU and is married to Alan Ruck, the guy who played Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Still not enough to make me like the movie.

Another interesting tidbit of her. She played a role in the HBO series Big Love. Here is a quote she made about it..
Big Love (2006) is not about mainstream Mormon culture; it was about a very specific splinter group, so it actually felt completely disconnected from my life [playing JoDean Marquart]. I approached it like I would approach any kind of religious culture that I know nothing about. But you know, my mom had to laugh, she was like, "Of all the shows, that's the one that you had to get a part on?"

We enjoyed Bad Words quite a bit, despite our dislike of the cheap gimmick of kids (and in other movies, old people) using profanity. Still, Jason Bateman does a very good job directing this film about a 40-year-old (played by Bateman) who competes in spelling bees because of a loophole in the rules. He's very funny, but his misanthropic character and the despicable things he does to hurt his competitors make it very hard to like the guy. It's a bit like Bad Santa, but a little different in tone and not quite as funny, although the films have equal IMDB scores (7.2). And co-star Rohan Chand (Issa in Homeland) is absolutely adorable. Don't be late as the opening voiceover is an important element in the conclusion.
Some here won't like it, and others certainly will. Here's the R-rated trailer (NSFW) that gives you a pretty accurate view of what to expect. If the trailer is a bit much for you, don't go, although the movie is no more objectionable than the trailer. Both the missus and I gave the movie thumbs up.
Oh, and I dazzled the missus (despite her denials) by knowing how to spell "floccinaucinihilipilification", which describes SU's treatment of all things BYU and LDS.Last edited by PaloAltoCougar; 04-02-2014, 10:22 PM.

Did she call it your imaginary word?

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I watched it last night too. I thought it was better than the first Captain America film. Lot of action, fighting, bullets, etc. I thought it was very similar to Avengers, but without the humor. It is a superhero movie, so you have to suspend any attempt at logic or reality (which is generally what most movies require to enjoy). It could have used a little more skin from Scarlet Johanssen.Originally posted by Walter Sobchak View PostCaptain America 2 is not a good film."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.

If you were going to see a movie after PH session and you could chose between Noah or Captain America 2, which would you chose?"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Did you enjoy the previous Marvel comic book movies (Avengers, C.A., Thor, etc)? What is your feeling on Russell Crowe nakedness?Originally posted by Moliere View PostIf you were going to see a movie after PH session and you could chose between Noah or Captain America 2, which would you chose?"Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.
