27 simple defensive assignment errors

The question is how many of those 27 assignment errors were by players that were filling in for injuries to Johnson, Tialavea, etc. ?
Particularly, how many incorrect calls were made on the field because Johnson wasn't out there?Last edited by Indy Coug; 09-22-2009, 05:51 AM.

I don't know. That statement just struck me as really odd.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostThe question is how many of those 27 assignment errors were by players that were filling in for injuries to Johnson, Tialavea, etc. ?

"No worries, guys. I looked at the tape and found 27 easily fixable mistakes."
If it was due to injuries, I'd feel more warm and fuzzy hearing "there were some mistakes made by new players playing in place of injured starters, we'll address it and they'll be ready for next game".
27 mistakes (on what 70 plays or so?) sounds like a mountain size problem.

Another question would be how many of the 27 mistakes are the exact same mistake being repeated? That would be a lot easier to whittle down the mistakes rather than 27 unique varieties of mistakes.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI don't know. That statement just struck me as really odd.

I wonder what is normal for a good team. I wonder if we looked at FSU if maybe they had 20.
From a novice's viewpoint sitting in the stands we got out talented. When an offensive lineman knocks the DL back, does that count as a simple defensive error? When a 6'3" guy out jumps a 5'7" guy for the ball, is that a simple defensive error?
The other question I would ask is, if you make 27 simple defensive assignment errors, you weren't very well coached were you? I think they are a well coached team and sometimes I think "Bronco speak" goes over the top.

True. The most honest thing to say would be, we need to continue to upgrade our talent. However, that would be a slap to the current players and very inappropriate if you are trying to build moral for the rest of the season.Originally posted by jay santos View PostThe comment struck me as bizarre, but at any rate, I'd rather have a coach acknowledge a problem and demonstrate a desire and confidence in fixing the problem, than to act like nothing was wrong.

The bottom line is that Florida State outexecuted BYU. It wasn't schematic. BYU repeatedly was in a position to make a play and didn't. BYU also did a poor job with outside contain (probably the bulk of the aforementioned "27 mistakes") where a guy had nowhere to go up the middle and bounced it outside because the exterior of BYU's defense got sucked into the middle.

I guess so. When Jordan made that shot on Russell, it was just Jordan outexecuting Russell. If the clippers start executing at a higher level, I think they can take the Lakers next year.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostThe bottom line is that Florida State outexecuted BYU. I think that it was about 70% FSU out executed BYU and 30% schematic. I personally think that BYU has the worst defensive schemes in football but thats just me.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostThe bottom line is that Florida State outexecuted BYU. It wasn't schematic."Take it to the Bank"

I finished that for you. Your welcome.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI wonder what is normal for a good team. I wonder if we looked at FSU if maybe they had 20.

When a 6'3" guy out jumps a 5'7" guy for the ball, is that a simple defensive error? When a white guy gets outrun by a black guy, is that a simple defensive error? Or is it simply a result of an overly restrictive Honor Code?

Well thanks, but I wasn't really thinking in those terms. After all I saw Jacobsen get behind one of their corners and run away from him.Originally posted by DU Ute View PostI finished that for you. Your welcome.
I was thinking more in terms of the big picture and perhaps some really good LDS kids we have lost to other schools because of the stuffy nature of BYU, which the HC exemplifies.
As I have said many times before, the HC for the most part, represents good solid behavior goals. It is the deification and enforcement methods of said honor code that I find archaic and rather FLDSish.
