  • For those pissed about AP voters that have OU ahead of BYU

Is there some irrevocable law decreed in heaven that the winner of one head-to-head game by a solitary point means that team is definitely better than the other team and therefore should be ranked higher?

I'm certainly not pissed about it, but my answer is:

    Hell yes, there's a law.

It's week one. Even if OK looked better in their spring game, and has more fans, and makes more money, and would beat BYU in a track meet, and gets pretty much every recruit they ever want, BYU won the freaking game.

    What else matters?

If the roles were reversed - I'll give you folks some time to stop laughing about BYU being ranked #3 in a preseason poll -

and Oklahoma had won the game, I'm pretty sure that Oklahoma would have been ranked higher than BYU in the next poll.

Of course, the rankings only matter when the season is over, so it's really not an issue.

And yes, I was at the Utah vs. Southwest Baptist game.

              Horrific.

rankings matter every week. If you are ranked super high, you can more readily absorb an early season loss. It is clear that OU is still in a position (technically) to fight its way into the title game.

All other things being equal, I would take a high pre-season ranking every time.

The scoreboard theory matters but really is a subset of Bayes' rule: it is Bayes' rule when your prior is diffuse (if not you're doing it wrong).

I'm sure Vegas would've placed SW Baptist as a 10 point favorite in the rematch.

At this point in the season, no BYU fan should be pissed about anything. To quote someone, I think it was Mike Waters or Tex but I can't remember for sure, just enjoy the ride.

I'm pissed that people ignore Bayes rule ... I consider at least an intitutive understanding (hey I am not even asking for a mathematical understanding) of it the mark of civilized society. If this board continues to ignore its implications things will not turn out well ...
